Description

MAKING POSTERS for NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

*Please note that this project is pre-approved by both The SODA Fund and MCPS. If you would like to participate you may do so! Simply follow the directions below and email The SODA Fund when you are finished. Thank you!

The SODA Fund, who helps victims and survivors of domestic abuse, is getting ready for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October and we need your help. This year we are doing a campaign to help others learn about The 15 Warning Signs of Domestic Abuse.  [www.thesodafund.org]

We are asking for your help in two ways:

1) Make a poster listing The 15 Warning Signs of Domestic Abuse (see below for the list).

2) Work with your parent or a teacher to contact a local grocery store, drugstore, hardware store, or retail store that is open for business, and see if they will hang your poster up during the month of October.

 What you will do:

1) Print out these directions and keep them handy so you can refer back to them!

2) You will need a poster board size 18x24 and a color printer or a box of colored markers.

3) Make a poster that contains the following elements:

  • October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
  • Do You Know The 15 Warning Signs of Domestic Abuse?
  • The SODA Fund™ – Education – Awareness – Prevention™
  • TheSODAFund.org
  • (list the 15 warning signs of domestic abuse, see below for the list)

4) When your poster is complete, work with a parent or teacher to ask a local retail store to hang up your poster for the month of October. (This is not a requirement to earn SSL credit, but it is big part of helping our community so we hope that you can accomplish this task).

5) Write one paragraph that answers the following questions (You may also use this same paragraph on your SSL form, so SAVE YOUR WORK!) What did you do? • What need did your service address? • Who benefited from your service? • What did you learn about yourself? • How was this experience connected to something you learned in a class at school? • Were you able to get someone to hang up your poster? How did that make you feel?

6) Email The SODA FUND with a picture or electronic copy of your poster and your paragraph to collect your signed SSL Sheet for this project. (Email: SusanSchwartz@thesodafund.org). NOTE: Please allow 3-4 business days to receive your signed SSL form.

YOU WILL EARN 3 SSL HOURS FOR QUALITY COMPLETION OF THIS PROJECT

Thank you for helping us with this important project!

BONUS: If you would like to send a photo of your poster hanging in your local store we will post it on our social media pages! Please let us know if you would like a shout out to your first name ONLY when we post!

See Picture Below for the info needed to create your poster!

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy. The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home until schools resume normal status.
