Dear Bulldog Families,
Now is the time in your child’s career where your family is exploring high school options for the next academic year. While you may decide that your assigned school is the right experience for your child, we want families to learn about two exciting new high school options opening in 2023 that will prepare students specifically for careers in medicine and construction.
The Medical Academy at D.W. Waters and the Building Construction Academy at Bowers /Whitley will be structured as traditional high schools with high-tech labs, innovative classrooms, career mentorship opportunities, specialized workforce-related electives, and career exploration.
Both of these academies will start with 9th grade and add a grade level each year, creating a 9th-12th grade cohort that will benefit from a smaller classroom setting and more hands-on learning.
Transportation will be available for students accepted into these academies through the magnet application process.
The Medical Academy at D.W. Waters will provide students with courses and certifications to specialize in careers for workforce placement and preparation for post-secondary education opportunities in the following areas:
- Nursing
- Radiology
- Cardiology
- Emergency Responding
Students who enroll in the Building Construction Academy at Bowers/Whitley will take classes and earn certifications to specialize in the following subject areas for workforce placement and preparation for post-secondary opportunities:
- Plumbing
- Construction
- Electricity
- Automotive
- HVAC (Coming Fall 2024)
Families can apply for these innovative programs NOW, through the district’s Magnet and School Choice Attractor Programs application. The application window is open until December 16th. To apply, families can visit www.hillsboroughschools.org/magnet
