Working statewide to inspire and empower people to make California’s past a meaningful part of their contemporary lives

JUNE 2022

LGBT Pride Month

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month) commemorates the impact that LGBTQ individuals have had on history. Notable celebrations include pride parades that attract millions of participants around the world. Previously known as the Gay Freedom Parade, California’s SF Pride parade is one of the oldest and biggest parades in the world.

To see more pride parade celebrations, visit our online collection of Joe Altman Photographs of the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parades.
Juneteenth (6/19)

A federal holiday, Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans on June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrive in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War is over and slavery in the United States is abolished.

To learn about the historical significance of Juneteenth in California, read our blog The History of Juneteenth and to learn more about the history of slavery in California, check out episodes of the Gold Chains podcast.
International Surfing Day (6/20)

During the early 20th century, Hawaiian athlete George Freeth taught many beach visitors who were afraid of drowning that the ocean could be a tremendous source of pleasure. Freeth’s combination of surfing and lifeguard instruction formed the foundation of California beach culture as we know it today.
