Transportation Services News for October 2021

Ride with traffic, wear a helmet, and other important e-scooter, bike, and skateboard safety reminders


The Virginia Tech Alternative Transportation Department reminds the campus community of important safety and operational reminders when operating an e-scooter, skateboard, and/or a bike on campus.
  • Always wear a helmet. Free helmets are available at the Hokie Bike Hub.
  • Always ride with the flow of traffic.
  • Dismount in heavy crowds and at occupied crosswalks.

Football parking reminders


Please be aware that parking and traffic changes will be in place for home games. Certain lots and roads will be restricted to no additional parking after 5 p.m. and must be emptied by 8 p.m. on the day before a game. General parking for football games will be available for $20 in the Perry Street Garage, North End Center Garage, Drillfield Drive, Squires Lot, Ag Quad Lot, and more. Please review the football parking page on our website to learn more about parking before and on game day.

  • Virginia Breeze: Services Union Station in Washington, D.C. with stops in the New River Valley, Shenandoah Valley, and Northern Virginia.
  • OurBus: Services Alexandria, Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Gainesville, Norfolk, Richmond, Springfield, Sterling, Tysons, and Washington, D.C.
  • Amtrak: Roanoke's Amtrak station can be accessed with the Smart Way bus included with your ticket when you select Blacksburg as the origin and/or final destination.
  • CollegeTransit: Services metro areas in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York during holiday breaks.
  • RIDE Solutions: Provides carpool matching for faculty, staff, and students.

Stay safe this spooky season

  • Stay alert for little goblins and trick or treaters and always drive cautiously.
  • If walking across campus, use the Friend Walk feature within the Hokie Ready app.
  • Double-check that your lights are on when navigating campus in the dark.

Are your lights still on?


With the time changing on Nov. 7 and earlier and darker skies ahead, remember:
  • When safely parked, be sure to check that your lights are turned off.
  • If you encounter a dead battery, Parking Services' Motorist Assist Program can help with a jumpstart by calling 540-231-3200 (Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.; after 5 p.m. on weekdays, contact VTPD at 540-231-6411).

Dining hall Grab & Go parking spaces

Don't risk a ticket! Fifteen-minute Grab & Go parking spaces are situated near dining halls on the Blacksburg campus. The spaces are located in the following areas:

  • Turner Place | Randolph Hall Service Drive/Barger Street | 4 spaces | ParkMobile Zone 85113
  • Owens Hall | Kent Street across from the Hokieshop University Bookstore | 5 spaces | ParkMobile Zone 85114
  • West End Market | 60-990 Washington Street - Student Services Building | 2 spaces| ParkMobile Zone 85115

University community members with a valid Virginia Tech parking permit may park in these spaces with their permit. Community members without a parking permit may use these spaces by purchasing 15-minute parking via the ParkMobile app.

Masks continue to be required on Blacksburg Transit


Per local, state, and federal mandates, masks continue to be required while riding Blacksburg Transit regardless of vaccination status.
