December 2022 Final Newsletter

Wishing You and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and Blessed New Year!

Greetings in the name of Jesus, our Savior! This will be my last newsletter as I am retiring at the end of 2022. Marie and I would like to thank all of you for your prayers and support during the past six-and-a-half years of service with the Office of International Mission of the LCMS. We would also like to thank those with whom we have worked both here and abroad.

I realized last month that it is the end of an era for our family. My great-great uncle, the Rev. Peter Dicke, was the first missionary in our family. He was born in Germany in 1822 and after receiving training at Rev. Wilhelm Loehe's mission school in Neuendettelsau, traveled to the United States and became a pioneer missionary in Wisconsin and Michigan starting many churches that are still in existence today (e.g. St. Paul's Lutheran, Bonduel, Wisconsin and St. James Lutheran, Shawano, Wisconsin). Then my grandfather, the Rev. Edward Dicke, served as an LCMS missionary in Brazil in the 1920-30s. More recently my parents served in Papua New Guinea for 20 years (1954-74) and my uncle and aunt, the Rev. Dr. Willard and Elinor Burce, served there for 40 (1948-88). Interestingly, it was that same mission school in Germany that sent the Rev. Johann Flierl to Papua New Guinea to begin mission work there in 1886. What is also fascinating is that St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bonduel, Wisconsin sent some missionaries to Papua New Guinea in the 1950s and 60s to work on the LCMS mission field there. I find it all pretty amazing to see God's hand at work in it all.

Some of you may have already received my formal retirement letter in the mail. If you haven't, please click here. It includes some anecdotes and a brief summary of our missionary service.

Thank you again and may God bless you all and keep you in His love and grace until He returns again in glory.

Yours in Christ,

Martin Dicke

P.S. Every year on January 2nd we commemorate how God used the Rev. Wilhelm Loehe and his little mission school to fulfill the Great Commission. In a couple of days, please say a prayer thanks for all the missionaries they sent throughout the world and ask God to continue to bless the harvest. For more information on this commemoration and a special prayer, please click here.

Thank you again for all your prayers and support. May God be with you until we meet again!
