Triangle, Cocoanut Grove, The Station: The History and Fires that Influenced the Life Safety Code and the Emerging Technologies Being Addressed Today
Robert Solomon, P.E. Principal, SLS Consulting, LLC, Adjunct Teaching Professor, WPI, Chief Knowledge Officer, CodeComply.Ai
For good or bad, regulatory codes for the built environment are often reactionary- everything is fine until it isn’t. This was the nature of the first editions of the NFPA Life Safety Code. Changes were made because of a tragic fire or prevailing regulations were summarily ignored by building owners, the adopting entity, or both. While reading the code is less than exhilarating, the history and evolution of the code help paint a picture of how far we have come and what challenges remain.
Robert provides support to SLS by maintaining and expanding relationships with clients and collaborators. He serves as a technical resource regarding the application of code-based solutions to unique building designs and the use of innovative construction assemblies and techniques.

Fall Protection beyond the 4 and 6’ rule
Mark Heffron
You have exhausted your choices through the hierarchy of controls and the only feasible way to protect your workers from striking the ground or level is to put them in a personal fall arrest system. In this breakout session, we know that workers exposed over four feet General Industry and six feet in Construction, and in most cases, and must be protected. So, you have selected a personal fall arrest system? What type of harness, who made the selection, is it appropriate for the fall? What about the connecting device, single lanyard, dual lanyard, snaphook size, do you go with a self-retracting lifeline, if so what type? Did you calculate the fall distance based on the equipment selection?
Manufacturers offer thousands of different types of personal fall arrest equipment. The system you chose to protect your workers for today’s fall may not be suitable for tomorrow’s. And training, who does it? A competent and qualified person. What does OSHA have to say? What about ANSI/ASSP Z359? We will look at some of the manufacturer’s instructions. They are all different and different for each piece of fall protection equipment. Is it all compatible? We will discuss two case studies where workers were using personal fall arrest equipment, the workers fell, which resulted in serious injuries and fatalities. So, who selected their equipment based on the fall hazard, was it appropriate for the fall, and training?

BOTTOM LINE
The right selection of fall protection system equipment for the fall hazard is necessary Training by a Competent Person, Qualified in… The right training program can and will change behavior and reduce risk Only well-informed workers can make good decisions These can be life and death decisions.

Mark has served as an EH&S safety professional in construction, general industry, transportation, and environmental industries since 1979, is retired from OSHA and presently is employed by FEMA as a Reservist Safety Officer. Mark is also a safety training instructor for safety consulting firms, including the Region 1 OSHA Training Institute. While with OSHA Mark was Sr. Safety and Health Specialist & Emergency Management Coordinator OSHA Region 1 Boston Office, in both enforcement and technical support throughout the New England area. Mark served as the Region 1 Subject Matter Expert in fall protection for the Regional Solicitor’s office.

This airport is approximately 45 miles (about a 50 minute drive) from the UMass campus. From Bradley attendees will need to book a shuttle service or rent a car to get to campus (see the transportation options below).

Attendees may find additional flight options into Logan International Airport in Boston, located approximately 95 miles (about a 2 - 2.5 hour drive) from the UMass campus. While more flight options are typically available into Logan, please remember to account for extra travel time to campus. Please also be sure to organize transportation to/from the airport to campus in advance of your arrival. Traveling by Bus
Amherst and the surrounding area are serviced by Peter Pan Bus LinesGreyhound and the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA). The most convenient service is offered by Peter Pan, so when possible those traveling by bus should book a Peter Pan bus ticket using "Amherst UMass, MA" as the destination (note the "Amherst Center, MA" stop is in downtown Amherst and will require additional travel to arrive on campus). Greyhound offers bus service to nearby Northampton, MA, located about a 20 minute drive from campus. From Northampton attendees should plan to travel to campus via a taxi service, Uber/Lyft, or PVTA bus.

Traveling by Train
Amtrak provides passenger rail service to nearby Northampton, MA, located a 20 minute drive from the UMass campus, and Springfield, MA, located a 30 minute drive from the UMass campus. For schedule information and to purchase tickets, visit Amtrak's website and select "Northampton, MA (NHT)" or "Springfield, MA (SPG)" as your arrival destination.

If you take a train to Northampton, MA, you will then need to take either a bus or taxi to the UMass campus. Both PVTA and Peter Pan buses service the area, but the bus stops are not located at the train platform and will require about a 7 minute walk. If you prefer, you may use one of the many local taxi services or Uber/Lyft. We encourage you to carefully plan your trip - including bus or taxi services - prior to your arrival as the Northampton train platform is not a train station and phone access, area maps, bus schedules, and bus tickets will not be available once you arrive. If you decide to take a train out of Northampton, remember to purchase your return ticket online prior to arriving at the platform. The train platform is located at 170 Pleasant Street in Northampton, MA.

If you take a train to Springfield, MA, we recommend booking a shuttle service, such as Valley Transporter, to get you from Springfield to Amherst. Bus services, including Peter Pan, are also available, but will require about a 15 minute walk from the train station to the bus stop. The train will arrive at the Springfield station building, located at 66 Lyman Street in Springfield, MA. This station building does have a waiting room, ticket office, quik-trak kiosk, and payphone, but we do still encourage you to plan your trip, including services from the train station to campus, prior to your arrival.

Exhibit Booth Details
Below are some important notes related to exhibit booths. Please review and contact us at registration@umass.edu or 413-577-8102 with any questions or concerns.

An 8' x 6' booth with pipe and drape, one six foot table, and two chairs will be furnished for each reserved exhibit space.

For an additional charge of $50.00, exhibitors can reserve access to a 120V electrical service available at their location. Exhibitors must supply their own extension cords and power strips. Extension cords must be 3 wire, grounded cords, minimum 18 gauge, type SJT or SJTW insulation. UMass Conference Services reserves the right to refuse use of any damaged equipment that does not meet these guidelines.

Exhibitors cannot use existing walls or ceilings for display purposes. All rear walls of each exhibit must be freestanding and no higher than six feet. Sidewalls of the exhibit must be no more than three feet high and should not interfere with the direct visibility of the adjoining exhibits.

Exhibits must be well planned and should not interfere with the flow of traffic or require relocation of furnishings, rugs and/or paintings.

Login credentials for wireless internet access will be provided upon arrival.

Exhibitors should not undertake any credit card processing on the University of Massachusetts network, either wired or wireless.

UMass Conference Services will not assume responsibility for the safety of any exhibits against damage or loss by theft, fire or other means.

Exhibits or displays may be shipped, if prepaid, no more than 3 days prior to the scheduled event for storage. To ship materials out after the conclusion of the event, exhibitors should either plan to drop materials off at a UPS, FedEx, or USPS location OR obtain and print out a pre-paid return label that can be affixed to all materials (materials with a prominently affixed pre-paid return label may then be brought to the UMass Campus Center Loading Dock for pick-up; please be sure to schedule pick-up with your selected carrier). For shipping materials in advance, the shipping address should read as follows:

      UMass Conference Services CS24251
      Campus Center Receiving
      University of Massachusetts
      Amherst, MA 01003

Shipping before and after the Summit
Exhibits or displays may be shipped, if prepaid, so that materials are received no more than 3 days prior to the scheduled event. Materials will then be securely stored until the event date. Please use the shipping address above. If you have questions regarding shipping or the delivery status of your package, please contact us at  registration@umass.edu or 413-577-8102.

At the conclusion of the event, exhibitors are responsible for arranging return shipping of all materials. Exhibitors may drop materials off directly at any UPSFedEx, or USPS location. Alternatively, exhibitors are welcome to print out a pre-paid return label in advance and then affix the label to materials at the conclusion of the event. All materials with a prominently affixed pre-paid return label may then be brought to the UMass Campus Center Loading Dock (located on the 1st floor of the Campus Center) for pick-up. Please contact your shipping carrier directly to schedule pick-up, or for additional details regarding shipping and/or pick-up times. Please note that exhibitors are responsible for packing and unpacking all materials, and also for obtaining all required shipping labels in advance of the conclusion of the event.

Exhibit Booth Setup and Teardown
Exhibit booths will be setup on the 1st floor of the UMass Campus Center, which is an open, public area. Our convention partners will setup all booths/pipe and drape during the afternoon of Tuesday, June 11. We tentatively anticipate booths will be available for vendors to start to setup around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11. Vendors may also wait until the morning of Wednesday, June 12, to setup, but should have all booths setup prior to the start of registration when attendees will begin arriving. As the 1st floor concourse is not a secure area, please be mindful of any items or materials left out on Tuesday evening as the space will not be locked or secured overnight. Vendors should teardown all booths at the conclusion of the event on Wednesday, June 12, including arranging shipping of any materials as per the options above.
