Asian Longhorned Beetle - Massachusetts

map of ALB quarantines in MA

Massachusetts ALB Eradication Program

ALB was first found in Massachusetts in August 2008. The Massachusetts Department of Conservation (DCR) issued the Massachusetts quarantine order in compliance with sections 8, 11, and 12 of Chapter 132 and section 1F of Chapter 132A of the Massachusetts General Laws on August 8, 2008. Due to additional detections of ALB infested trees, the regulated area has expanded within Worcester County. APHIS first issued a Federal Order that mirrors the regulated boundaries of the State on September 4, 2008. In Massachusetts, the DCR and APHIS work together to operate the ALB eradication program.

Contractors

APHIS and/or our State partners contract with licensed tree removal specialists to perform the tree removal work under supervision by APHIS or a partnering State official. In Massachusetts, the removal contractor changes based on the State's competitive bidding process.

Compliance Training

Free compliance training are available for businesses and individuals who perform work that may involve moving woody materials in the regulated area. There is no charge for the training or the compliance agreement. Compliance agreements may be obtained by attending a 45 minute training session. All individuals and commercial businesses (e.g., landscaping, construction companies, nurseries, tree removal services, firewood dealers) performing work in the regulated area are required to comply with certain regulations. Companies doing pruning or removals, or in any way handling wood from ALB host trees within the regulated area must have a valid compliance agreement. Please be advised that Regulatory Officers conduct surveillance within the regulated area to enforce the quarantine, and fines may be assessed if businesses do not comply with Federal and State regulations.
