Tom and Mary Howatt
Management '72, Masters of Management '73
Tom Howatt, the child of a Scottish immigrant, broke new ground in his family by being the first to pursue a college education. Initially delving into aeronautical and astronautical engineering, he later found his true calling in Purdue’s management school. With both bachelor’s and master’s degrees under his belt, Howatt rose to the position of president and CEO of Wausau Paper. In 2015, he and his wife, Mary, demonstrated their commitment to education by contributing $1.5 million to establish the Thomas J. Howatt Chair in Management. Subsequently, on Purdue Day of Giving, they increased their philanthropic efforts with a $2.2 million commitment to create the Howatt Scholars program, providing 12 full-tuition scholarships.
Beyond these acts of generosity, Howatt has woven his legacy into Purdue's future through a $20 million provision in his estate plan dedicated to supporting the business school. Howatt believes now is the opportune time to publicly acknowledge Purdue's role in his legacy. He envisions the university as a premier source of business leaders, especially with the recent introduction of integrated business and engineering degrees. Since 2001, Howatt has actively contributed to Purdue's trajectory as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council, expressing satisfaction in witnessing the remarkable achievements of the past eight years.
