The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square seeks vocalists to join the 360-member ensemble

(KUTV) — The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square is looking for vocalists for its 360-member all-volunteer ensemble.

Applicants must be members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in good standing, be between 25 and 55 years of age as of April 30, 2021, and currently live within 100 miles of the Salt Lake Tabernacle.

The link to a digital application and an application guide is to be posted on Monday, June 1, 2020 — 30 days earlier than previous years. The earlier availability gives applicants more time to complete their applications, which must be submitted electronically no later than August 15.

The process to become a member of the choir is demanding — stretching over nine months and consisting of four phases, a press release stated. Music Director Mack Wilberg said in a prepared statement:

It is a rigorous process that yields marvelous results. Each year we continue to be pleased with the high level of musical expertise displayed by choir applicants and look forward to meeting them during the audition process.

FIRST PHASE - The first phase requires submitting an online application with a digital voice recording. (A recommendation from an ecclesiastical leader will now be requested electronically, following a process used for other church applications.)

SECOND PHASE - The second phase is a musical skills assessment that measures musical ability and aptitude.

THIRD PHASE - Applicants with acceptable test scores then advance to the third phase, which includes an in-person audition before the music directors and an interview with the choir president.

FOURTH PHASE - Phase four starts in January 2021, when those who successfully complete the first three audition phases begin 16 weeks of participation in choir school, which requires 100% attendance, and the Temple Square Chorale. Choir school consists of classroom training in music theory, sight-singing, rehearsal techniques, and more.
