ARLINGTON, Va. (7News) — The Animal Welfare League of Arlington responds to a wide variety of emergencies when animals are in need.

But this was a first, they say.

When AWLA received a call about an owl in a resident’s backyard that was unable to fly, an animal control officer went to investigate.

He found an owl with a talon clamped between a turtle’s carapace and plastron (the top and bottom shell).

After bringing them back to the shelter, he and another worker carefully dislodged the talon from between the turtle’s shells.

The owl had a minor injury and the turtle was uninjured.

Neither the owl nor the turtle commented about how they got stuck or whether they were emotionally injured or embarrassed by the incident.

A licensed wildlife rehabber will take care of the pair until they can be released back into the wild.
