Job Summary
The College of Engineering (COE) at Oregon State University (OSU) invites applications for the position of School Head of Civil and Construction Engineering (CCE). This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

Oregon State University (OSU) seeks a dynamic and effective leader as Head for the School of Civil and Construction Engineering (CCE). The School Head will work closely and collegially with the CCE faculty and staff to pursue the School’s mission and strategic plan, effectively manage School resources, ensure high quality educational experiences for students, support and develop research opportunities for faculty, and ensure efficient School operations. The School Head will work closely with the Dean and the leadership team of the College of Engineering on an ambitious agenda to address some of the world’s most complex technological challenges in the areas of civil, construction, and architectural engineering. The Head will help CCE identify future areas of growth and investment and will provide organizational and administrative expertise for the College and the University during an exciting era of increased research productivity and greater societal impact. The Carnegie Classification for OSU is Doctoral University: Very High Research Activity.

CCE provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art education that prepares over 700 undergraduate and 150 graduate students for successful careers in industry, government, and academia. The school currently consists of approximately 60 faculty and staff, including 48 full-time tenure/tenure-track faculty members and instructors, and offers B.S., M.S., M. Eng., and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering, as well as B.S. degrees in Construction Engineering Management and Architectural Engineering. CCE and the College of Forestry offer a dual degree B.S. program in Civil and Forest Engineering and two dual degree M.S. and Ph.D. programs, Civil Engineering and Wood Science Engineering and Civil Engineering and Sustainable Forest Management.

The school actively develops and maintains broad and deep relationships with alumni and industry. These relationships result in high job placement for students, frequent interaction with companies, in-kind donations, and endowments supporting seven faculty scholars. In addition, CCE faculty have extensive research collaborations with multiple public and private funding agencies at the state and national levels, and other OSU colleges, in areas such as marine energy, forestry, materials, resilience, and safety. CCE is home to the Kiewit Center for Infrastructure and Transportation, the Driving Simulator Lab, and the O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Center which houses the National Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure wave flume and wave basin. CCE is also a collaborator with the TallWood Design Institute housed in the College of Forestry. Annual research expenditures for the school are over $12.8 million. Key Responsibilities
35% Management and Supervision of School Operations
  • Supervise CCE staff and empower team decision making in support of COE strategic goals.
  • Manage financial resources to achieve budget targets.
  • Work collaboratively within the School and College to optimize educational delivery.
  • Conduct performance reviews of faculty and staff.
  • Oversee student services provided by the school.
  • Manage physical resources, including laboratories and other physical assets needed to safely deliver programs.
  • Provide mentorship opportunities and career/professional direction to faculty and staff so that they may achieve professional success.
  • Maintain compliance with Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) and American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) accreditation requirements.

30% Strategic Leadership of the School and Collaboration with College Leaders
  • Work collaboratively with CCE faculty and staff to plan, implement, and achieve school goals and realize CCE’s mission, inclusive of research, education, service, and industry relations.
  • Lead and support the CCE faculty and staff in the implementation of the College’s strategic plan that focuses on excellence in research, education, student success, and the COE’s inclusive and collaborative community.   • Increase student retention and graduation rates.
  • Work collaboratively to support and grow research programs and maximize their impact.
  • Strive to enrich the school’s community of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Regularly communicate with internal and external partners.

20% External Relations
  • Advance relationships with industry, government, alumni, and other partners.
  • Collaborate with OSU Foundation for fund development to help secure resources needed to achieve strategic goals.
  • Collaborate with college industry relations team.
  • Create a compelling case for private investment.
  • Cultivate prospective donors.
  • Steward relationships.
  • Provide leadership to the Construction Education Foundation Board and the CCE Industry Advisory Board.

10% Teaching and Research
  • Maintain critical elements of a research program, including collaboration with research-active faculty, to stay current with state-of-the-art research in chosen field.
  • Maintain connections with teaching and mentoring at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

5% Other responsibilities as requested by the dean.
What You Will Need
  • Ph.D. in a field associated with civil, construction, or architectural engineering.
  • Current or previous appointment as a tenured full professor in academia, or a commensurate record of achievement in research, teaching, and service that merits appointment as a tenured full professor within the school.
  • Demonstrated relevant managerial and leadership experience in a higher education or academic setting.
  • A demonstrable commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, such as a record of mentoring and supporting students from diverse backgrounds, fostering positive and affirming faculty interactions across differences, or challenging structural/cultural barriers that limit movement towards socially just science education and practice.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success in building strong interpersonal skills with ability to foster relationships internally and externally and promote a collaborative culture.
  • Experience providing mentoring and/or professional development to others.
  • Experience with or understanding of academic recruitment, retention, tenure, and promotion.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Demonstrated success in leadership, team building, and management of complex programs.
  • Industry experience in civil, construction, or architectural engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience leading large, interdisciplinary, externally funded research.
  • Experience working with stakeholder group external to the unit including industry, alumni, and/or donors.
  • Professional Engineers license.
