TODAY’S GAME Conference USA foes. Liberty has not played consecutive nonconference games against opponents from the same conference since 2014. That year, the Flames met Colonial Athletic Association foes James Madison and Villanova in their first two FCS Playoff games.

Joshua Mack, RB

STORYLINES

1) Liberty (1-0) will face FIU (0-0, 0-0 C-USA), its second straight Conference USA opponent, during its 2020 home opener at Williams Stadium this afternoon. 2) After a season-opening 30-24 win at Western Kentucky, the Flames will look to start 2-0 start for the first time since 2017. Liberty has won its last five home games, dating back to last season. 3) Liberty and FIU will be squaring off for the first time on the gridiron. Both teams played in bowl games in 2019. The Flames won the Cure Bowl and the Panthers lost the Camellia Bowl. 4) Liberty QB Malik Willis will seek an encore performance to an outstanding Flames debut last Saturday. He rushed for a Liberty quarterback-record 168 yards and three scores at Western Kentucky, to go along with 133 passing yards. 5) RB Joshua Mack also rushed for 100 yards last week. As a team, Liberty posted 354 yards rushing, its most since 2012. 6) The Liberty defense limited Western Kentucky to 291 yards of offense. It is the second straight game the Flames have held an opponent below the 300-yard mark. Georgia Southern managed only 249 yards during the 2019 Cure Bowl.

“4 DOWNS” WITH THE PANTHERS

1) Liberty’s first home game of the season at Williams Stadium will be FIU’s 2020 season opener. It is the first time since 1974 that Liberty’s home opener has taken place on Sept. 26 or later.

3) Liberty is opening a stretch of three straight home games, all against first-time opponents. This is the Flames’ third threegame homestand since the start of the 2010 season (also 2013, 2019). 4) FIU will be the first Sunshine State squad to visit Williams Stadium in four years. Liberty last hosted a Florida team when it defeated Jacksonville 55-7 on Sept. 10, 2016, for its home opener. Like FIU, Jacksonville was a first-time Liberty opponent making its season debut. FIU has played in a bowl game in each of the last three years. The Panthers lost 26-34 to Arkansas State in last year’s Camellia Bowl.

MILESTONE WATCH

79: RB Joshua Mack enters today’s contest 79 rushing yards away from 3,000 for his career. The total includes his time at both Maine and Liberty. Mack has rushed for 79 yards or more in six of his last 10 games, dating back to last season. 100: The next Liberty player to tally 100 receiving yards in a game becomes the first Flame not named Antonio Gandy-Golden to post a 100-yard receiving game since current Liberty senior DJ Stubbs caught eight passes for 108 yards against Idaho State on Oct. 20, 2018. 300: Stephen Calvert graduated with a Liberty-record 18 300-yard passing games to his credit. No current Flames quarterback has recorded a 300-yard game at Liberty. Josh Woodrum was the last Flame not named Calvert to throw for 300 yards in a game on Oct. 17, 2015, at Monmouth.

2) The Flames are opening the 2020 season versus Western Kentucky and FIU, a pair of

WILLIAMS STADIUM CLEAR BAG POLICY CLEAR BAG POLICY

In an effort to enhance fan safety and expedite entrance to Williams Stadium, Liberty University has implemented a security screening process. This includes a clear bag policy that limits the size and type of bag that can be brought into the stadium by fans. The implementation of this measure is intended to enhance public safety while minimizing time spent searching bags at gate security checkpoints, thus easing access into the stadium.

The policy is consistent with the NFL’s current model. Only clear tote bags that do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12” or one-gallon plastic freezer bags will be allowed in Williams Stadium. In addition, small handheld clutch purses no larger than 4.5” x 6.5” will be permitted. Spectators will also be able to carry other items into the stadium, such as binoculars, cameras, and smartphones.

Liberty’s clear bag policy has been in effect since 2016 and will be strictly enforced during the 2020 football season.

PLAYER FEATURE STORY TRUSTING GOD’S PLAN MALIK WILLIS Everything happens for a reason.

If life has taught me anything, it taught me to take everything one day at a time. It taught me not to worry about things outside of my control. It taught me that God’s time is the only time.

Well, most of the games. I wasn’t allowed to travel to away games. To say the entire experience was tough would be an understatement. There were times when it was downright disheartening. I wanted to be with my teammates whether I was playing or not.

There are no certainties in life but the here and now.

But I also saw the opportunity in my situation. I finally had a chance to focus more on becoming a student of the game instead of solely relying on my athleticism.

As long as I work hard and lean on my faith in God, everything else will fall into place as it should. It took me a long time to bring myself to that sort of mindset. But without those struggles, I would have never had a chance to earn this new opportunity.

There’s a big difference between knowing where you want to go with the ball and actually knowing the coverages you’re facing. I was able to take that leap toward learning defenses and the responsibilities of every player within that defense.

A CHANGE IN SCENERY

For the first time in my career, I feel like I’m actually seeing the game rather than just playing it.

Sometimes things don’t work out the way you plan. I wasn’t doing things the right way at Auburn. I let the early success go to my head and forgot the work it took to get me to this level. Football has been a part of my life since I was five years old. That’s a lot of years of blood, sweat, and tears to make playing Division I football a reality.

GOD’S PLAN I’ve actually improved as an athlete after sitting out the year, which is something that wouldn’t have happened if I had gone ahead and played.

I’ve dedicated my whole life to this sport.

Maybe it was God’s way of forcing me to slow down and go back to the basics. Perhaps all of this was just His way of humbling me.

Transferring really opened my eyes to everything I was doing wrong. It brought me back to ground zero and forced me to return to the same mentality I had before college. I had to go back to the basics and reinvent myself as a student-athlete.

My journey to Liberty has given me a chance to find myself as a football player and as a man. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t thank God for dragging me through everything he did to ultimately put me in this position.

Hitting the reboot button was a mixture of uncertainty, excitement, and confidence rolled into one emotional ball. That’s the only way I can describe the feeling I had the very first day I arrived at Liberty.

A better man, teammate, and football player — it’s proof that maybe everything really does happen for a reason.

MORE STUDENT THAN ATHLETE The start of a new journey, new place, and new people — Liberty changed me for the better in ways I never even thought possible. Due to the NCAA transfer rules, I was forced to sit out for the entire year with the team in 2019. So I spent all season practicing and watching the games from the sidelines.

Today, Liberty remains committed to investing in the lives of students, helping them realize their full potential, and bringing glory to God. Liberty holds regional accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)* to award associate, bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctoral degrees. In addition to regional accreditation, many programs at Liberty have earned further accreditation through industry-specific organizations. These accrediting bodies maintain rigorous standards and only recognize educational programs that represent the highest levels of excellence in their specializations.

COMMITMENT TO CHRISTIAN VALUES

Liberty’s unique character derives from its roots in the fundamentals of the Christian faith, as well as an abiding respect for this nation’s founding principles of limited government, individual liberty, and free enterprise. Our faculty members integrate biblical truth into every discipline while fostering a learning environment in which students are encouraged to excel. Liberty remains on the cutting edge of higher education, providing rigorous academics without compromising its commitment to Christian values.

In addition to outstanding residential programs, Liberty is a leader in online education. *Contact the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges at 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Ga. 30033-4097 or call (404) 679-4500 for questions about the accreditation of Liberty University. Normal inquiries about the institution, such as admission requirements, financial aid, educational programs, etc., should be addressed directly to Liberty University.

2019 FBC MORTGAGE CURE BOWL

2019 FBC MORTGAGE CURE BOWL

In a season that saw the offense grab most of the attention with its prolific numbers, it was the Liberty defense that showed up in its biggest game. A stout defensive effort led Liberty to a 23-16 win over Georgia Southern in the 2019 FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl. With the win, the Flames capped off the most memorable year in program history with an 8-5 record. Liberty completed its FBS reclassification process in August 2019, received its first-ever bowl game invitation on Dec. 8, and walked away from Exploria Stadium with a bowl game trophy in hand. With the victory, the Flames became the third FBS transitioning team in NCAA history to win a bowl game during their first season at the FBS level. Georgia Southern came into the game ranked No. 8 in the country in rushing offense, averaging 261.5 yards per game. Liberty came into the game ranked No. 100 in the nation in rushing defense, surrendering 192.7 yards per game on the ground. Liberty’s defensive effort held Georgia Southern to 154 rushing yards, a single rushing touchdown, and three field goals in the victory. On the day, the Flames outgained the Eagles in total offense (402 to 249).

Flames defensive end Jessie Lemonier was named the 2019 Cure Bowl MVP, finishing the game with eight tackles, including two sacks. Lemonier ended his two-year career with the Flames ranked third in program history with 20.5 sacks. Liberty’s four-year starting quarterback Stephen Calvert finished the day completing 16-of-35 attempts for 270 yards and two touchdowns. He ended his career as the program’s all-time career leader in passing yards (12,025), completions (896), and touchdowns (93). Antonio Gandy-Golden finished his last game in a Liberty uniform with five receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown. Now a member of the Washington Football Team, GandyGolden completed his career as the program’s all-time leader in receptions (240), receiving yards (3,814), and touchdowns (33).

IAN MCCAW BIO IAN MCCAW

Ian McCaw has a vision for Liberty Athletics, and he has worked quickly to make that vision a reality since being named the department’s 11th director of athletics on Nov. 28, 2016. His vision is for Liberty’s intercollegiate athletics program to Train Champions for Christ, provide a world-class student-athlete experience, and achieve victory with integrity. McCaw has lived out this mission, guiding Liberty Athletics to unparalleled success on the field, in the classroom, and in the local community in a short time on Liberty Mountain. Heading into the 2020-21 athletics season, Liberty’s teams have captured 26 total conference titles since McCaw’s arrival on Liberty Mountain. The Flames Football program won it’s first-ever bowl game, men’s basketball captured it’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory, and Liberty studentathletes have posted department record numbers in GPA and graduation success rate.

During Liberty’s final two seasons as a member of the Big South Conference, McCaw guided Liberty Athletics to its 13th and 14th Sasser Cup titles in 2017 and 2018, an annual award given to the top athletics program in the conference. McCaw also helped pave the way for the future of Liberty Athletics on May 17, 2018, when it was announced that 17 of the 20 NCAA Division I programs would end a 27-year run in the Big South Conference to join the ASUN Conference for the 2018-19 athletics season. Under McCaw’s leadership, Liberty Athletics wasted little time making an impact in the ASUN Conference. During its inaugural season as a conference member, Liberty’s Athletics programs captured seven ASUN championship titles, including men’s basketball (regular season and tournament), baseball (tournament), women’s tennis (regular season), men’s indoor track & field, women’s indoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, and women’s outdoor track & field. Additionally, Liberty Athletics was awarded the Bill Bibb Trophy, which is presented to the ASUN Conference institution with the top overall athletics program. Liberty was also presented with the ASUN Conference’s Jesse Fletcher (Men’s All-Sports) and Sherman Day (Women’s All-Sports) Trophies. This marked the third time in conference history a member institution has swept all three honors and the first time since FGCU did so in 2012-13.

Less than three months into his time at the head of the Athletics Department, McCaw helped launch Liberty to the top level of intercollegiate competition. On Feb. 16, 2017, Liberty received notification that the NCAA had approved its request to enter into a two-year Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) reclassification process. McCaw led Liberty during its final season as a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) independent in 2017 and guided the Flames into their first season at the FBS level in 2018 — fulfilling the vision of university founder, Dr. Jerry Falwell, for Liberty’s Athletics programs to compete at the highest level of NCAA competition.

As a team, Liberty finished the 2019 season ranked No. 21 in the country in passing offense (288.9 yards per game) and No. 32 in total offense (439.4 yards per game). Liberty posted an 8-5 record, the most wins for a Flames football team since 2014. When hired at Liberty on Dec. 7, 2018, Freeze brought over 25 years of continued coaching success, including head coaching experience that has led to conference titles, nationally ranked recruiting classes, and bowl appearances at multiple stops. Prior to his current coaching position at Liberty, the native of Oxford, Miss., returned to his hometown school and led it back to championship form during his five seasons as head coach at Ole Miss (2012-16). Freeze guided Ole Miss to bowl games during three of his five years with the Rebels, including victories in the Music City Bowl (2013) and the Sugar Bowl (2015). Freeze’s time in Oxford was highlighted by a 10-3 campaign in 2015, the program’s first 10-win season since 2003. The Rebels won their first four games of the 2015 season, including a 43-37 road victory over No. 2 Alabama, Ole Miss’ first win in Tuscaloosa, Ala., since 1988. Alabama went on to claim the national title, finishing the season with a 14-1 overall record. The Crimson Tide’s loss to Ole Miss marked the third time in program history that the Rebels were the national champion’s only loss during their championship season. The 2015 campaign also included a thrilling 38-27 win over No. 21 Mississippi State in its rivalry “Egg Bowl” game with the Bulldogs and a 48-20 win over No. 16 Oklahoma State in a New Year’s Sugar Bowl contest. Ole Miss was ranked as high as No. 3 in the national polls in both 2014 and 2015 and finished top 10 in the country for the first time since 1969 after the Sugar Bowl win (No. 9 in the coaches poll and No. 10 in the Associated Press poll). Ole Miss was a mainstay in the national polls during Freeze’s tenure, including top 25 rankings for 45 weeks over his five-year coaching stay and a string of 27-straight weeks in the polls for the first time since 1957-62.

In 2013, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) awarded Freeze the Grant Teaff Coach of the Year award. Freeze has been heavily involved with FCA during his entire coaching career and has been featured in the FCA Magazine and spoken at FCA functions. Freeze was also a finalist for the 2014 Bear Bryant Award and the 2014 Dobb Trophy. The Bear Bryant Award is given annually to the top NCAA National Coach of the Year, while the Dobb Trophy honors the head coach whose team excels on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. Freeze has an eye for the nation’s most talented high school players, collecting four nationally ranked recruiting classes at Ole Miss. In 2013 and 2016, his recruiting classes ranked in the top five nationally, making them the best in program history. Freeze and his staff developed 20 players who earned All-SEC honors, including All-Americans Cody Prewitt, Senquez Golson, Robert Nkemdiche, Laremy Tunsil, Evan Engram, Laquon Treadwell, and Trae Elston. Treadwell was named Ole Miss’ first ever SEC Freshman of the Year in 2013 and became the school’s first Biletnikoff Award finalist in 2015. Nkemdiche was the first defensive lineman to be named a Hornung Award finalist. Engram won the Ozzie Newsome Award and Pop Warner College Football Award following the 2016 season. Eleven Ole Miss players were selected in the NFL Draft during Freeze’s time as head coach, including first-rounder Engram as well as D.J. Jones, Derrick Jones, and Chad Kelly hearing their names called in the latest draft. In 2016, the Rebels had three first-round draft picks in Tunsil, Treadwell, and Nkemdiche. Donte Moncrief, Senquez Golson, Fahn Cooper, and Cody Core were also drafted over the last four years. Before returning to Oxford, the former Ole Miss assistant experienced a record-setting run at Arkansas State. With Freeze as head coach in 2011, the Red Wolves captured the Sun Belt Conference championship and became just the third school in Sun Belt history to finish undefeated in league play with a perfect 8-0 mark. The 10-2 overall record marked the program’s first 10-win

HUGH FREEZE BIO season since 1986, when ASU was a member of the I-AA Southland Conference. In the best debut season ever by an A-State head coach, Freeze became just the 14th FBS first-year head coach to win 10 regular season games. He also returned ASU to a bowl game for the first time since 2005. Freeze was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year, while 13 of his pupils earned all-conference honors. Freeze’s first season in Jonesboro saw him serve as Arkansas State’s offensive coordinator, guiding the Red Wolves’ offense to a record-breaking year in 2010. ASU, ranked No. 42 in the nation in scoring offense, finished the season averaging 30 points a game and recorded at least 20 points in 11 consecutive games for the first time in school history. Freeze’s offense scored 46 touchdowns for the fourth-most in school history and the most since the 1975 season. Prior to his arrival at Arkansas State, Freeze compiled a 20-5 record over the 2008 and 2009 seasons at the helm of the Lambuth University football program in Jackson, Tenn. Freeze was named the American Football Coaches Association’s Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2009 after leading the Eagles to their best regular season in school history with an 11-0 record.

Among his talented pupils during that period were eventual Rebels and former NFL starters Michael Oher and Greg Hardy. Before assuming the role of head coach at Briarcrest, Freeze served as the teams’ offensive coordinator and defensive backs coach from 1992-94, as the Saints reached the TSSAA state semifinals twice. A 1988 graduate of Senatobia High School, Freeze received an associate degree from Northwest Mississippi Community College in 1990 and was a two-year letterwinner on the Ranger baseball team. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in coaching and sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1992. It was while attending USM that he became active in mission projects, serving as a missionary in Houston, Salt Lake City, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Australia. Freeze also served as the state president for the Mississippi Baptist Student Union. Born in Oxford and raised in Independence, Mississippi, Hugh and his wife, Jill, are the parents of three daughters: Ragan, Jordan, and Madison.

Prior to taking over as head coach at Lambuth, Freeze served on the Ole Miss staff from 2005-07, including the final two seasons as an assistant coach. Before going to Ole Miss, Freeze served 13 years at Briarcrest Christian School (Memphis, Tenn.) as a classroom teacher, coach, and administrator. He was the Saints’ head football coach from 1995 to 2004, running the nohuddle “spread system” for six years that led to six straight state championship games. Freeze compiled a 99-23 record while at Briarcrest, which included an undefeated season in 1996, and led the school to state championship titles in 2002 and 2004. Briarcrest won regional titles in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001, and 2002, and Freeze was named the Region 8-AA Coach of the Year five times and Associated Press Coach of the Year four times.

LIBERTY FOOTBALL CENTER ABOUT The Liberty Football Center (LFC) is a 65,455-square-foot facility located in the north end zone at Williams Stadium that was renovated and reopened in Spring 2020. Shortly after the completion of the 2018 football season, Liberty began the renovation project to expand its football operations center that originally opened in 2006 and was known as the Football Operations Center (FOC). The recently completed renovation project added 18,000 square feet to the three-story facility. The top floor of the newly renovated facility houses 17 offices, 10 position meeting rooms, and offensive and defensive meeting rooms, plus a 147-seat, theater-style team meeting room. The middle floor of the building, located on ground level, includes a new locker room with 122 lockers and an attached equipment room to better service Liberty’s football players.

64

This floor also houses a 13,000-square-foot player’s lounge, including a nutrition center, and can accommodate up to 130 people. The area also will be used as a recruiting area during home football games. A glass enclosed cardio workout room replaced the existing front entrance to the operations center, and the workout area overlooks the lower level. Rounding out the new amenities of this floor is a press room for weekly press conference and postgame interviews, plus a new training room. The sports medicine area also includes 11 treatment beds, an on-site x-ray room, and hydrotherapy pools. Closing out the facility is a state-of-theart weight room in the lower level of the operations center. The 16,000-square-foot workout space is furnished with the latest training equipment, allowing Liberty’s players to prepare themselves to excel at the highest level of college football.

FLAMES SPIRIT AND TRADITION THE NICKNAME The Liberty University athletics teams have been nicknamed the Flames since 1974, when the student body chose the Flames over several other options. The decision was based upon the school’s motto, “Knowledge Aflame.” Liberty began in 1971 as Lynchburg Baptist College with green and gold as the school’s colors. In 1976, the name was adjusted to Liberty Baptist College, and the colors were changed to red, white, and blue. The school once again changed its name in 1985 to Liberty University. However, throughout the shifts, “Flames” remained the nickname for Liberty’s athletics teams. In 1980, the eagle was designated as the Flames’ new mascot because of the patriotic symbolism and connection with the school name. It was designed with the Flames’ nickname in mind. Thus, a flaming torch clutched in the eagle’s left talon was included in the original mascot renderings.

ATHLETICS EXCELLENCE YEAR IN REVIEW Before the athletic year was halted prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, five Liberty teams had captured conference championships. Men’s basketball (regular season and tournament), women’s basketball (tournament co-champion), men’s indoor track & field, and women’s indoor track & field each earned ASUN Conference championships. Meanwhile, women’s swimming & diving won back-to-back Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) crowns. Football also made history with its first-ever bowl game victory. The Flames topped Georgia Southern 23-16 to win the 2019 Cure Bowl.

FOOTBALL

The Flames became just the third team ever to win a bowl game during their first season of bowl eligibility after moving up from FCS to FBS. Liberty finished 8-5, recording its most wins in a season since 2014. The Flames’ impressive season also featured a victory over Bahamas Bowl champion Buffalo. All-American wide receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden was a fourth-round pick of the Washington Football Team in the 2020 NFL Draft.

VOLLEYBALL

FIELD HOCKEY

The Lady Flames finished a 10-8 season with a No. 19 national ranking. For the first time, two Liberty players (Jill Bolton and Ashley Dykema) earned All-America honors in the same season.

CROSS COUNTRY AND TRACK & FIELD

The Flames swept the men’s and women’s team titles at the ASUN Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Liberty Indoor Track & Field Complex. Immediately after the meet, Brant Tolsma announced his retirement after 34 years coaching at Liberty. He finished his career with the Flames with 116 conference titles and 77 conference coach of the year awards. In cross country, Liberty finished as the men’s and women’s ASUN runners-up for the second year in a row.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Liberty won a school-record 30 games, tying for the second most victories in Division I for the 2019-20 season. For the second consecutive season, the Flames shared the ASUN regular-season title and cut down the nets as tournament champions. Liberty topped Lipscomb in the ASUN Championship title game, the final contest played at the Vines Center.

Liberty went 21-12, capped off by the first two postseason victories in program history. The Lady Flames won a pair of National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) matches to reach the tournament’s quarterfinal round. Liberty was 11-5 in conference play, setting a program standard for ASUN victories in a season.

MEN’S SOCCER

Midfielder Ruben Garcia became the Flames’ first CoSIDA Academic All-American since 2011 with his selection to the second team. The senior was also the program’s first ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year selection.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Liberty’s 10-7-2 record featured its first-ever win over an ACC opponent (Pitt). The Lady Flames yielded zero goals in regulation during ASUN Conference play and were the only ASUN team to defeat conference champion Lipscomb.

87

ATHLETICS EXCELLENCE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The 20-11 Lady Flames finished the season with an eight-game winning streak, reaching the ASUN Championship title game for the second year in a row. When the championship game was canceled, Liberty and FGCU were named ASUN co-champions.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING

Liberty successfully repeated as CCSA champion for the first time in program history, winning a program-record 14 CCSA events. Payton Keiner was named a CSCAA All-American when the 2020 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships were canceled, becoming the third All-American in program history.

BASEBALL

The Flames’ 10-7 record included series wins over Seton Hall and Kent State. Noah Skirrow, Troy Britts, and Landon Riley combined for the fourth no-hitter in program history during a 6-4 home triumph over Marist.

SOFTBALL

Liberty topped No. 6 Michigan and No. 21 Ole Miss during its early-season gauntlet of a schedule. The Wolverines were tied for the highest-ranked opponent the Lady Flames have ever defeated. Liberty won its only four home games of the season and has now won 16 straight at Liberty Softball Stadium.

MEN’S TENNIS

The Flames’ 8-6 mark was headlined by the team’s first-ever triumphs over Penn State and Virginia Tech. Chase Burton set the program record for singles victories during the Penn State match, finishing the year with 77 career wins.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The Lady Flames ended up 7-4 during their abbreviated season. Individually, Kalani Soli went 16-5, including a 9-0 mark at No. 1 singles in the spring. Soli also topped No. 20 Asuka Kawai of Illinois at the Oracle ITA Masters during the fall.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Liberty won all three of its matches at Liberty Lacrosse Field, extending its home winning streak to eight. The Lady Flames finished No. 2 nationally for caused turnovers per game (14.83), while Anna Keebler racked up 24 goals in just six contests.

MEN’S GOLF

Led by GCAA/Ping All-Americans Kieran Vincent and Jonathan Yaun, Liberty closed the 2020 season with a No. 32 national ranking. The Flames bookended their year with impressive team performances, opening with a victory at the Island Resort Intercollegiate and finishing with a runner-up effort at the General Hackler Championship.

LARRY BLAIR II

MEN’S BASKETBALL: 2004-07 Larry Blair II remains one of the most prolific scorers in program history and ranks second only to Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame inaugural class member Karl Hess. Blair finished his distinguished career on Liberty Mountain with 2,211 career points and is tied for the program’s all-time lead with Hess with 43 career 20-point games. Blair burst onto the scene as a freshman and was named the 2004 Big South Freshman of the Year. He led the Flames in scoring during the 2004 Big South Men’s Basketball Championship title game with 29 points, guiding the program to an NCAA Tournament berth for the second time in school history. The native of Charlotte, N.C. is the only player in program history to earn All-Big South honors all four years of his playing career (2004 – second team; 2005-06-07 – first team). He was also a two-time VaSID all-state selection and named to the 2007 CollegeInsider.com Preseason Mid-Major All-America team. Following his days in a Liberty uniform, Blair went on to play 11 seasons of professional basketball in Finland, France, Georgia, Hungary, Lebanon, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

HENRY ELLIOTT

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD: 1987-89 Henry Elliott made the most of his three-year career with the Flames after transferring to Liberty from Campbell following his freshman season. Elliott was a two-time All-American in different disciplines, first earning NCAA Division II AllAmerica honors in 1987 in the discus with a

fourth-place finish. Two years later, he became Liberty’s first-ever NCAA Division I Men’s AllAmerican with a seventh-place finish in the decathlon at the national championship in 1989. He also was the Penn Relays champion in the decathlon as a senior in 1989. Elliott helped cap Liberty’s dominance in the Mason-Dixon Conference during the program’s final days at the NCAA Division II level. Liberty captured the Mason-Dixon Conference Indoor Track Championship titles all three years he was a member of the team in 1987, 1988, and 1989, while securing Mason-Dixon Conference Outdoor Track Championship titles as a junior and senior in 1988 and 1989. The native of Spivey’s Corner, N.C., made the team’s 100-Point Club all three years of his career with the Flames and still ranks in the program’s top 10 of six different events more than three decades after graduation.

ANDREA [WILDRICK] HAMPSON

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD: 1999-02

Andrea [Wildrick] Hampson owns more NCAA Division I All-America honors than any other female student-athlete in the storied history of the Liberty Track & Field program. Hampson became the program’s first-ever female competitor to win All-America honors at the NCAA Division I level in 2000 with a ninth-place finish at the outdoor national championship in the pole vault. She also earned All-America honors in the same discipline in 2002 at the NCAA National Indoor Track Championship (tied for fourth place) and Outdoor Track Championship (second place). Since her graduation in 2002, no other Lady Flames track & field athlete has come within a foot of breaking her indoor and outdoor pole vaulting records. The native of Mechanicsville, Va., was a threetime member of Liberty’s 100-point club and joins fellow Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame honoree Heather (Sagan) Zealand as one of the program’s two female performers with a top two finish at a Division I national championship.

BASEBALL: 1974-77

Jeff Mincey helped establish a standard of excellence for Liberty’s baseball program as a four-time team captain and member of the inaugural team in 1974. In just three short seasons, Mincey and his fellow teammates went from start-up program to reaching the 30-win mark for the first time in program history. Liberty posted a 31-10 record in 1976, finishing the season with a win over No. 17 ranked South Carolina. Mincey led the team that season with nine home runs, along with a .343 batting average and 21 RBI. Mincey was the first player in program history selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 21st round in 1976, but he elected to return to Liberty for his senior season. The native of Concord, Calif., returned to his alma mater in 1980 and served on staff as an assistant coach for eight seasons (1980-87). He was Liberty’s first-ever full-time assistant coach, helping the Flames transition from the NAIA level to becoming Liberty’s first program to play at the NCAA Division I level in 1984. While on staff, Mincey helped Liberty make three consecutive trips to the NAIA World Series (1981-83) and post the program’s first-ever 40-win season in 1983 (40-17).

MORGAN HOUT

FOOTBALL HEAD COACH: 1984-88 Morgan Hout was a pioneer and the visionary head coach that guided Liberty’s football program through the transition from the NCAA Division II ranks into the Division I era. Hout was at the helm of the football program from 1984-88, where he coached 11 All-

Americans. He also helped recruit 11 Liberty football players who went on to play in the NFL, including the two highest NFL Draft selections in football program history. Hout’s squads continually faced off against the toughest competition in the country. His 1984 team wrapped up the season with a 27-14 win over NAIA No. 1-ranked Carson-Newman, marking the first time in program history Liberty defeated the No. 1 ranked team in the country at any level. The native of Marietta, Ga., guided Liberty to an 8-3 record during the program’s first year at the NCAA I-AA level in 1988, and finished the year ranked No. 18 in the country. He was duly honored for his efforts when he was named the 1988 VaSID Coach of the Year and the Bobby Ross Coach of the Year.

SAMUEL JOHNSON

MEN’S SOCCER: 1984-86

Samuel Johnson is one of the most decorated players in men’s soccer history, joining fellow Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame selection Paul Annan as the program’s only other twotime All-American. Johnson was the second men’s soccer player to earn All-America honors, doing so at the NCAA Division II level in 1985 and 1986. He was also named to the Virginia Intercollegiate Soccer Association first team three times (1984-86) and was a two-time selection to the NSCAA South Atlantic All-Region squad (1985-86). As a defender, Johnson led the Flames in scoring during the 1985 campaign, netting 10 goals while adding two assists to tally 22 points as a junior. Liberty finished the 1985 season with a 14-2-3 record and advanced to the semifinals of the Virginia State Intercollegiate Tournament. Liberty’s 14 victories is tied for the program record for victories in a season. The Ghana native helped Liberty post 27 shutouts during his three seasons on the pitch with the Flames. Liberty recorded 12 shutouts in 1985, setting a new program record that has only been matched by the 2009 team. Liberty allowed 11 goals in 1985, the third fewest in a season in program history.

ROCK ROYER/MAC RIVERA AWARD ABOUT In 1974, the Rock Royer/Mac Rivera Award was established to honor the graduating senior student-athlete at Liberty University who best exemplifies the character and drive epitomized in the lives of these great Christian men. Rock Royer was Liberty’s first football coach in 1973. Mac Rivera was a member of Liberty’s basketball team from 1972-74. Both Royer and Rivera died tragically at a young age. This award encompasses more than just athletic ability. It recognizes the graduating student-athlete who has maintained an exemplary testimony on the playing field, in the classroom, and among the student body. The 2020 recipient of this award was women’s swimming & diving standout Hannah Baker. A two-time team captain, Baker helped the Lady Flames capture back-to-back CCSA titles in 2019 and 2020. She swam on nine CCSA-champion relay teams and was a five-time CCSA individual podium finisher. Her 1:46.55 leadoff leg of Liberty’s CCSA and conference-meet record 7:10.73 800 free relay in 2018 remains a program record for 200 freestyle. Baker is the third swimmer all-time at Liberty to go 12-for-12 at CCSA Championships, qualifying for A Finals in all 12 individual events she entered at conference meets over

the last four years. She is the first swimmer in program history to earn top-three CCSA finishes in the 50 free, 100 free, and 200 free during her career. During her time at Liberty, the Lady Flames posted a 49-7 dual-meet record, the winningest four-year dual-meet record in program history. A native of Fairfax, Va., who maintained a 3.95 GPA, Baker graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She was named a 2018 CSCAA Scholar All-America honorable mention recipient. During her time at Liberty, she helped the swimming & diving team achieve national acclaim, as the team’s 3.79 GPA in Fall 2018 was the highest of any NCAA swimming & diving team in the nation. Outside of the pool and classroom, Baker has spent many hours helping with community service projects. During her time at Liberty, she aided with the Dollar Makes a Difference campaign, Trick or Treat so Others Can Eat, Share the Warmth, Serve Lynchburg, R.S. Payne School Field Day, Human Kind 5K and Fun Run, Football Clean-up, Liberty Athletics Golf Outing, and Freedom 4/24 5K.

The guests experimented on stage with song demos from music students before they were joined by former “America’s Got Talent” contestant and current School of Music student Joseph O’Brien for a closing worship song co-written by O’Brien, Executive Director of the Liberty Worship Collective Kevin Huguley, and Liberty Music Group songwriter John Forystek.

“Honestly they are just as good and even better than some of the places we record music in Nashville,” Lowery said. Müller said that the couple days spent with the studio musicians are a sample of what the School of Music’s commercial students will be afforded throughout their time at Liberty.

“Having the Nashville studio musicians on campus and in the studio is one of the key features of the Michael W.
