2021 Annual Report

Cleveland Zoological Society

GRATEFUL FOR 2021

Dear Friends –

In looking back on last year, I am so grateful for all we accomplished together.

The Zoo Society successfully overcame the financial stresses of 2020 exceeding all of our revenue goals, including record membership revenue and the addition of 11,000 new families to our memberships. We received generous funding for exciting new capital improvement projects, and started design and planning of the transformational Primate Forest. We launched new fundraising programs to grow engagement and revenue. We welcomed a new Board president and the largest new class of Directors in years.

But numbers and data aside, I am most grateful for the year in which we came back together – safely, cautiously, with a few pauses as we all figured out how to navigate our new in-person world. But for the most part, we were together and that led to our successes.

The Zoo Society team was back in the office, hosting donors and prospects on tours and going behind the scenes to learn about our favorite species. We enjoyed more than 20 Sunset Safari dinners and met new friends. We celebrated the 10th anniversary of African Elephant Crossing and welcomed back longtime supporters whose generosity and engagement moved the Zoo forward a decade ago. We partied at Twilight at the Zoo, Asian Lantern Festival and Wild Winter Lights. It was a glorious reminder that everything is easier with friendships and collaboration.

Thank you for supporting us in 2021, and we can’t wait to see what 2022 brings.

BACK IN PERSON

The return to in person visits and events – coupled with the highest recorded Zoo visitation in 10 years and record membership sales –kept the Zoo Society team busy. Membership sales topped out at $4.7 million, more than one million over projection. The benefit of being an outdoor location, along with new events and experiences for members, meant members made up more than 35% of Zoo visitors and renewed at a high rate.

Monthly keeper walks for donors to The Pride, more than 20 private Sunset Safari dinners, The Pride donor nights at Asian Lantern Festival presented by Meijer and Wild Winter Lights presented by NOPEC, and a record number of private golf cart tours

meant we returned to seeing our closest friends and supporters after many stayed away in 2020. Twilight at the Zoo presented by KeyBank and the Tails + Cocktails series presented by the Steffee Family raised operating support for the Zoo Society.

New fundraising programs proved successful in 2021 including a revamped Honor and Memorial opportunity for donor signage at animal exhibits and an annual fund campaign utilizing recycled RainForest dome panels. Continued operating support from corporate and foundation donors, along with a second Payroll Protection Program grant helped stabilize operational funding the year after Covid’s impact.

FUNDRAISING FOCUS: CAPITAL PROJECTS

Capital project design and the promise of new habitats and new spaces was a focus of collaborative planning between the Zoo and Zoo Society in 2021.

A $3 million gift from the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation will fund renovations to the Zoo administration office spaces, the development of a guest services hub and a new Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Auditorium for public programming. The gift is the largest single gift ever secured by the Zoo Society. The building renovations

began in late 2021 and will be completed in 2022.

Zoo staff also worked behind the scenes on the design and planning for a new habitat for tropical bears. Sloth and Andean bears now occupy the oldest habitats at the Zoo and are deserving of a new space that meets their needs as arboreal, tropical bears and highlights the conservation work the Zoo does to protect Andean bears in the wild. The Zoo Society secured a $2 million naming level gift from a longtime leadership donor for this project and

raised an additional $1.5 million from donors. The project is scheduled to break ground in summer 2022.

Eagle Zip Adventure opened in July 2021. More than 40,000 guests soared 150 feet above Waterfowl Lake, with revenue from the add-on experience going toward future Zoo capital projects. Eagle Zip Adventure was funded by Cleveland Metroparks, the Zoo Society Board of Directors, and a generous individual lead gift.

As the nonprofit that raises money in support of this Zoo, our first focus is on improving spaces for our animals and our guests, but with a 139-year-old Zoo, we’re always looking for new opportunities to enhance our existing facilities. The gift from the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation will better position us for the future, helping to improve operations and our philanthropic outreach, as well as creating new spaces for guests to connect with our mission.

BABY BOOM

Historic animal births were celebrated throughout the year, starting with a trio of spunky tiger cubs who made their public debut in Rosebrough Tiger Passage on a snowy April morning. Luka and Anya were the first Amur tiger cubs born in Cleveland in more than 20 years. Shortly after birth they were joined by Indrah, a Malayan tiger cub from the Tulsa Zoo, who quickly bonded with the two.

The animal care team cared for the trio at the Sarah Allison Steffee Center for Zoological Medicine for three months before they were old enough to venture into Rosebrough Tiger Passage. More than 400 people donated to vote on the cubs names, raising $14,000 for conservation efforts.

The tiger trio were not the only adorable zoo babies in 2021. Koen the koala was a guest favorite and the second joey born to mom MacKenzie and dad Nyoonbi. Zaki, an adorably fuzzy orangutan baby, was born to mom Kera Wak in April and made a suitable sibling for 7-year-old Merah.

The year ended with an extraordinary birth – the first gorilla

baby was born in the Zoo’s 139-year history. Although he came more than 8 weeks premature and faced an early bout of pneumonia over the holidays, baby Kayembe is currently thriving and helping the Zoo’s animal care team rewrite the manual for raising a gorilla baby in captivity. Much more of Kayembe’s story will be told in 2022 as we watch him grow.

“ ”
Baby animals are so exciting for our staff and guests, but they are also an important reminder that our high standards of animal care, welfare research and habitat design make Cleveland Metroparks Zoo a successful breeding facility. We are bringing these important species into a habitat with best-in-class animal care and veterinary support.
Christopher Kuhar, Ph.D. Executive Director Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

CONSERVATION COMMITMENT

The Zoo Society provided nearly $500,000 in conservation funding support for the Zoo’s various partners around the world. This funding was a blend of generous donations, investment spinoffs, as well as a portion of each membership purchased in the year. Public naming contests for the baby orangutan and tiger cubs resulted in more than $20,000 for conservation and helped engage the public in education efforts about these species and their habitats in the wild.

Conservation partners are located in Africa, Asia, South America and beyond and support more than a dozen partners and a variety of projects.

Zoo staff also resumed travel to Rwanda to partner with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund (DFGF) after a 12 month pause. Dr. Kristen Lukas, the Zoo’s Director of Conservation & Science, conducted training for students from the University of Rwanda as part of DFGF’s Memoirs Program. Zoo staff have helped train more than 30 Rwandan biology students in conservation science through this program since 2014. Staff also assisted in onsite design and development of programming for the new Ellen DeGeneres Campus. The multi-acre, eco-friendly facility will open in 2022 and will include the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Interpretive Walking Trail among its many features.

BOARD AND STAFF STRATEGY

Being back in the office and in person for donor and Board events made 2021 more enjoyable, financially successful and collaborative. The Zoo Society hired two new Advancement Officers and an Executive Assistant to help with engagement, and our staff came back to the office after working mostly remotely for more than 12 months.

After being an active Board member for nine years, Chris Myeroff became Zoo Society Board President in June 2021 after serving six months as President Elect. A Cleveland native, Chris is also a member of the Cleveland Orchestra board. At the Zoo Society’s December Board meeting, seven new Directors began their first term – the largest new class of Directors in recent years.

A Board and staff task force began a strategic planning process that will help develop new focus areas and encourage new initiatives to elevate the profile of the Zoo Society as a philanthropic priority in Cleveland. Support from the Cleveland Foundation allowed the Zoo and Zoo Society to complete an economic impact assessment of the Zoo — the first such study in more than 15 years.

The staff and Board also collaborated with the Zoo and Cleveland Metroparks leaders on the beginning of the Primate Forest fundraising campaign, which would launch in early 2022. As part of this work, the Zoo Society hosted state and local legislators on an informational tour of The RainForest and recent Zoo projects.

The Zoo Society staff were thrilled to welcome back old friends and longtime donors at a summer celebration of the 10th anniversary of African Elephant Crossing, a habitat that changed the face of the Zoo and garnered national attention both for the guest experience and animal welfare and husbandry standards. The anniversary was also an opportunity to discuss the upcoming Primate Forest project as the next transformative capital project.
