Jan. 24 – 25, 2025 | Newport, OR

The Big Blue Film Fest (BBFF) was a rousing success this year, and our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone for their overwhelming support! We hope you can join us next year when it returns Jan. 24-25, 2025.

The goal of our festival is to showcase ocean-themed films at the confluence of marine sciences, humanities and the arts. We also aim for the festival to engage the community and raise awareness about marine issues and how we might solve them.

For our second annual BBFF, we are delighted to announce that 155 films were submitted by filmmakers from 39 countries! Our final selection includes 27 films. We have grouped these films into six, two-hour blocks that will be shown in two locations  - Hatfield's Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building and the Newport Performing Arts Center. Go here to find the film schedule, locations, and summaries of each film. Watch trailers for some of this year's films on this playlist.

The BBFF is a collaboration with Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center, Marine Studies Initiative and OSU Productions, as well as the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts and other community partners.

The BBFF Mission

Our goal is to inspire, educate and captivate our audience members with science and ocean entertainment. Help us tell the stories that will shape our future understanding of one of our planet’s most important resources. The Big Blue Film Fest is hosted at the Hatfield Marine Science Center, OSU’s coastal research campus, which has operated in Newport, Oregon, for 59 years. Hatfield is dedicated to education and exploration with classes, internships, top-quality research and meaningful community outreach.

Expanding to Two Locations

We are delighted to announce the Newport Performing Arts Center as a new co-host location for the film festival and our partnership with the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts. On Saturday, films will be shown at the PAC and Hatfield's Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building (GVMSB).

On Friday, the GVMSB will host the Friday night mixer and premier, an event where filmmakers and community members will mingle and see the festival's winning film.
