Grants

The History of Philosophy Forum offers two grant programs to support the work of visiting researchers working on topics in the history of philosophy, broadly construed: an annual Small Grants Program for International Researchers and a Summer Writing and Research Grant program. It also provides Notre Dame faculty and graduate students with funding and sponsorships for events pertaining to the history of philosophy.

Small Grants Program for International Researchers

Our Small Grants Program for International Researchers is open to scholars based at institutions outside the USA. These grants are intended to defray the costs of a short stay at the University of Notre Dame, for the purposes of conducting history-of-philosophy research that would benefit from the use of our world-class library resources and consultation/collaboration with our faculty.  The grant can only be used for travel and accommodation. The standard award amount is $3,500, up to 8 potentially available each year.

Applications for this program are closed. The application window for AY 2025-26 will open sometime in Fall 2024.

Summer Writing and Research Grants

Our Summer Writing and Research Grant program invites applicants working on research projects in the history of philosophy (broadly construed) who are interested in visiting Notre Dame for writing and/or research during the summer. Recipients are given access to Notre Dame's world-class library and are provided free accommodation for one month in a furnished visiting faculty apartment next to campus.

Applications for this program are closed. The application window for Summer 2025 will open sometime in Fall 2024.

Event Funding & Sponsorships

The Forum offers an internal grant program available to Notre Dame faculty and graduate students, to provide funding and planning assistance for events pertaining to the history of philosophy, broadly construed. Commonly sponsored events include hosted lectures, panel discussions, reading groups, and workshops.

Applications for the 2023-2024 academic year are being considered on a rolling basis until all allocated funds are disbursed.
