Health Sciences hosts National Library of Medicine traveling exhibit

The Health Sciences Library is hosting the National Library of Medicine Traveling Exhibit, “Binding Wounds, Pushing Boundaries: African Americans in Civil War Medicine.” The exhibit is on view in the library until April 3.

The traveling banner exhibition and companion website explore the stories of African American men and women who, during the American Civil War, overcame prejudices to serve as soldiers, nurses, surgeons, laundresses, cooks and laborers. Their participation in the war challenged the prescribed notions about race and gender and pushed the boundaries of the role of black people in America.

The exhibit includes an education component with a K-12 lesson plan and a university module.

The National Library of Medicine produced “Binding Wounds, Pushing Boundaries: African Americans in Civil War Medicine” with guest curator Jill L. Newmark.
