[PROJECT ONBOARDING] Skooner #597
Comments
Welcome! @DuaneOBrien, we'll be tracking work in here? |
Hi @amye when do you need this by? I can stand the doc up today :) |
Sooner the bettter! Lots of things happen from this. 👍 |
Created and merged! https://github.com/indeedeng/k8dash/blob/master/MAINTAINERS |
Hi @amye, what's the timeline for the name change? Also, just to clarify, who is responsible for the new trademark clearance? |
Not specific on the timeline, but if you watch the recording, the intention is to reduce confusion from the Kubernetes dashboard and this project. |
Hi, any plans to move the project to its own GitHub organization? |
Website was updated with the LF footer and are now in line with the website guidelines. |
Yes, planning to move the project to its own GitHub organization once we rename the project. Alongside that, we'll purchase a new domain and transfer it to LF. We'll also rebrand and upload assets/logos to the LF repo at that time. |
Please ping me about the new org name, so I can update DevStats. |
welcome @jadeapplegate! We'll be tracking work in here. |
Hey all, @alisonjudy, @jadeapplegate - checking in on the rename. I'm holding off from adding you all to the maintainers lists until that's complete. |
@jadeapplegate, checking in on the rename here! |
@amye A quick update: Our teams in Austin have been impacted by the recent storms, so we lost the last few weeks of work time. However, we are zeroing in on a short-list of names that we are planning to share with our Legal department by end of this week. And @herbrandson and I have time set aside next week to review the remaining items in this onboarding checklist. |
Good update! Wasn't sure where you all were, but happy to work with you! |
@amye What's the best way to go about checking the items off this list? We aren't able to check the boxes - would you like us to create a pull request? |
@amye One additional question: For the step of "GitHub: ensure 'thelinuxfoundation' and 'caniszczyk' are added as initial org owners, this helps us make sure we have continuity of GH ownership", should these folks be added to the project as maintainers? We're not sure what "initial org owners" means in this context. |
GitHub has a notion of "Owners" for orgs
https://docs.github.com/en/github/setting-up-and-managing-organizations-and-teams/maintaining-ownership-continuity-for-your-organization
No need to add us as maintainers, that's up for your community to decide
how it works :)

Comments in here are just fine! |
@caniszczyk this project is part of the indeedeng org which hosts many repositories. I don't believe we'll be able to add you as an additional owner of that org. Does this mean we should create a new/separate org for this project? Or is there another path forward? |
@amye we've read through, understand, and agree to all of the items in "From the project side, please ensure that you". Please feel free to mark those as completed. thx! |
Most other CNCF projects move to a separate GitHub org after they join the CNCF (unless they're already in a separate org). If you decide to do so, please ping me when this is done, so I will update DevStats to track a new org(s). |
@amye What's the preferred way for us to transfer the Google Analytics for the project's site? |
Send an invite to amye@linuxfoundation.org! |
@jadeapplegate: Any updates on the new name/repo? Thanks! |
hi @amye - our Legal department is still reviewing the re-name options but we hope to have an answer soon! |
@jadeapplegate: Just checking in on rename. Thanks! |
@amye We've landed on a new name, and legal has approved it. Is there an agreement we need to sign now that we have the name? |
https://github.com/cncf/foundation/tree/master/agreements has all the trademark agreements, start there! |
@amye - A question from our legal team: Is the trademark agreement a requirement to be accepted into the sandbox? I ask because if it's not required, they may need to do a more in-depth research on the new name. |
This is required, but we have registered and non-registered trademark agreements depending on your situation. |
Hi @amye, a quick update. We're working on the behind the scenes changes needed for the rename. Legal has approved the agreement. Duane's out on PTO this week but I will have him sign the agreement on Monday and get it to you. |
Checking back in, @jadeapplegate. Any good news here? |
Hi @amye - Yes, several updates and a couple questions: Updates:
Questions we have:
|
1) not sure what you mean here?
2) for Dockerhub, has the team considered using GitHub Packages now? it's
built into GitHub https://github.com/features/packages

Hi @amye <https://github.com/amye> - Yes, several updates and a couple
questions:
Updates:
- The new project name is Skooner.
- We're in the process of renaming the project in all places,
including all documentation and the website.
- I've sent you an email with the signed trademark agreement.
Questions we have:
1. As part of handing over our Google Analytics, we have to go through
an an external data sharing review process, which asks for the specific
metrics you'd like us to share. Could you let me know which data you're
interested in?
2. The team is planning to create a new group in Dockerhub as part of
the rename effort. Is there a preference on your end for Dockerhub or
something else?

Hi @jadeapplegate
Thank you for the help! Reach out with any questions. |
Yay, great to have you on board @poconnor1 :)
I'll check with the team and get back to you. I believe we're set on these but let me check on the open governance. I'll be out of the office for the remainder of the week but will circle back on Monday. Cheers! |
Hurray, marking off the analytics. @jadeapplegate, checking in here. Anything else I can help with? |
@amye A couple more updates - we’ve been making progress against this list. Could you please mark the first four items in the top section as complete? We’re still working on the open governance piece to round out that section. I will send you the assets for the new skooner logo via email. We are using the non-trademark agreement which I’ve sent over previously. We’ve added 'thelinuxfoundation' and 'caniszczyk' as initial org owners. Could you check that item off the list? Thanks! Getting closer! |
Lovely! Marking those off. |
I would toss it in Monitoring, Amye, there is no perfect location

cncf/landscape#2182 is in! |
Welcome letters are out, the last piece is just that domain transfer. |
Thanks, Amye. Hoping to get the domain transfer resolved this week! |
@jadeapplegate: So the domain transfer is failing, I am guessing it is because it is an .io domain and was registered within the past 60 days? |
Hi @amye, you're correct. The domain was registered on May 10 so it's been 63 days. We've requested another code, so Mariela will be in touch soon with that. Just out of curiosity, have you tried the code today? |
Hi, @amye! I was notified by our registrar this morning that they received the domain transfer request and responded successfully. Can you confirm? Also, as a follow up to Jade's comment from yesterday, we did refresh the code for you. It should still be the one I sent you via email. Thanks! |
Domain transfer completed, marking as closed. Welcome onboard! |
