Public Voices Fellowship Program

The application for the Fall 2024 OSU Public Voices Fellowship is open. Deadline for submission is April 1st. Apply now!

The Public Voices Fellowship program is a prestigious national initiative launched by The OpEd Project to change who writes history. It has been piloted at top universities across the country, with the goal of enabling a more diverse set of thinkers to contribute to important public discourse. The fellowship offers an unprecedented opportunity for mid-career and senior faculty members and administrators to receive training, engage with a prestigious network of journalists, and be part of a professional development cohort centering around public impact and media communications.

This fellowship is especially timely given the current dialogue on gender, racial, economic and other forms of inequities within our social institutions, and the low representation of women and other underrepresented minorities in the science, engineering and medical professions.

Fellows are assigned to work with veteran journalist mentors for dedicated one-on-one coaching throughout the first three months. In addition, fellows have periodic opportunities to join calls with public thinkers and expert journalists, and  receive weekly customized email support and news alerts. Upon completion of the three-month fellowship, they have access for another three months to a powerful network of peers, as well as to The OpEd Project's national network of high-level journalist mentors.

More Details about Public Voices Fellowships

Using time tested methods of transformational learning, fellows explore how credibility works, how ideas spread, when and why minds change, and how ideas play out over time and space. This program will engage selected fellows in intense, results-oriented thinking and activities around their own knowledge and impact. It will provide the inside information, high-level support and media connections to become influential on a large scale. Other participating institutions include Yale, Dartmouth, Northwestern, The Ford Foundation, and more.

Fellows are required to participate in four convenings scheduled during the cohort’s assigned term. These meetings are designed around the following themes: Knowledge, Connection, Contagion, Legacy.

To learn more about these themes, the overall methodology and goals of the program, visit the Public Voices Fellowship page.

The fellowship has a track record of stunning results, generating personal, professional, and public outcomes with far-reaching implications. Fellows have published op-eds in high-impact venues, and gone on to publish history-changing books. They have briefed Congress, advised the White House, launched new research studies and centers, and sparked national and international debate. They have written books, collaborated on research grants, and driven policy change. The resulting impact of their ideas entering public consciousness has been expansive and is hard to overstate. Fellows will participate in four convenings scheduled during the cohort's assigned term. Each convening will be designed around one of the following themes: Knowledge, Connection, Contagion, and Legacy.

Twenty fellows will be selected. All OSU academic faculty are eligible to apply to this program with the approval of their supervisor. However, this program may be best suited for professorial faculty at the associate or full rank who are interested in expanding their research impact as a public scholar.

The cost per fellow is $4,000 dollars. OFA will provide a 50% match thus reducing the cost to $2,000 dollars per fellow. The balance of the cost should be supported through academic units, colleges, or professional development funds. Unit heads should work with fellows to adjust their fall workload in ways that will allow them to fully participate in the program.
