Olympics: Henry Martín and Guillermo Ochoa to play for Mexico

The association football tournament at the 2020 Summer Olympics is scheduled to run from 21 July to 7 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan. The event is getting closer and the 16 teams have to soon turn in their final roster, which includes the three players above the age of 23 that will participate.

Mexico has chosen two players from Club América

Several reports point out that the coach of the Mexico Olympic team will confirm in the next couple of days that goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and striker Henry Martín will be included in the final roster for the tournament. The two players from Club América have the experience that the team needs in a short tournament.

Martín has earned a starting role under new manager, Santiago Solari, at América in the 2021 Guardianes tournament. The striker has scored seven goals and given two assists in his 13 league appearances this tournament. Ochoa is the starting goalkeeper for the Eagles and the senior national team. In this tournament he has kept a total of six clean sheets and conceded 16 goals in 15 Liga MX matches.

The third ‘veteran’ player that Lozano has in mind to be included in the final Olympic roster is Edson Álvarez. The Mexico Football Federation is currently negotiating with Ajax to let him play in the Olympics this summer, since it is not a FIFA event, the clubs are not obliged to let their players go if they don’t want to.
