In the Shadows Security #6

Guts & Glory: Brick

Rate this book
"That city is well fortified which has a Brick instead of a wall of men."

Former Navy SEAL sniper, Brick, has no idea what hits him when a woman bursts into his life unexpectedly. So not only is he dealing with this female whirlwind, he’s dealing with his own past coming back to haunt him.

Note: Brick is the sixth book of the Guts & Glory series, a six-book spin-off from my Dirty Angels MC series. While it’s recommended to read both series in order, each book can be read as a stand-alone. As with all my books, this has an HEA, no cliffhanger or cheating.

They say to save the best for last and in my opinion this series has ended with the best!

Brick and Londyn are my top favorite JSJ couple ever! Not only do they have amazing chemistry, it was so palpable at one point I feared my kindle would overheat, but they are both complex and flawed and utterly perfect for each other.

On the surface Brick portrays himself as carefree and easy going but dig a few layers and the man is hiding a sea of hurt and pain. Likewise, Londyn has put on a brave face, hiding behind her whit and attitude to try and recover from a major betrayal.

The plot is engaging, funny, emotional and downright INTENSE at times! Jeanne knows how to weave a well rounded story that draws you in like a moth to a flame, insuring nothing else matters until you reach that last page!

And just when you think you’ve seen the best she has to offer, BAM, the epilogue for this book will have you feeling like you’re riding a unicorn over a rainbow. Yup, it’s that good!!

Londyn is a hot mess for most of this one, but especially at the start. Brick being a man-whore is obviously attracted to her, you wouldn't think things would work between them, but it does. I think part of it is due to them being away by themselves, working a case where they have to pretend to be a couple. They have fun with it and more grows. It's only when they get back home that things fall apart. Brick becomes scared with how things ended with the case, which causes him to pull away.

I loved how Rissa and Mercy end up getting them back together. Love too how all the other Shadows start giving Brick grief during one of their poker games, it was what he needed.

The ending to this one was perfect, loved how it cemented things between the Shadows and the DAMC.

This one has a slightly different tone regarding the plot, compared to the other 5. It was refreshing and I loved it. A little scary and alot intense. But sexy, sweet, poignant, romantic, and hilarious... I wasn't crazy about the Epilogue though. I'd rather it ended with something more intimate with just Brick and Londyn..

This was still a good close for this series though.

I would recommend this series.

The last installment of the Guts & Glory series and one of my favorites. Brick and Londyn were great characters and their chemistry was off the charts. Brick has been the jokester of the guys so I was excited to get his story. We know our Shadows are all broken in some way and what happened in Brick's past is enough to break anyone. I loved how this author writes alphas with a soft spot for their woman. And strong heroines that overcome their obstacles and get their HEA. So sad this series is coming to an end. 💜

Sad to see the end of this series. Hopefully some of the same people will show up in the authors next series and give a five little glimpse of their future.
Brick is the king of hook ups. Known as "swipe right". His hook ups came from using dating apps and he let anyone know who looked at his profile that all he wanted was a few hours of sex. No overnight stays or even a second time. This man has issues. Still didn't explain fully why he was a one time hitter.
Londyn is Russia's sister. All she ever wanted was a love like the one her parents had. Problem was... she was looking too hard and coming up empty. Like her last guy that ended up with her coming to stay with Rissa and Mercy. Mercy needed her out of their house so when a job came up where Brick was working it and he needed a fake wife he sent Londyn. Only one thing Mercy and Rissa made Brick and Londyn promise... not to have sex. They both promise because it would cause problems. Haha
Londyn makes good on her acting with the targets but she has a problem with doing as she is told when the job seems to be failing. Out to do whatever it takes will she take it too far and put her life on the line?

This is a much read series. You don't have to read Down and Dirty first but many of the same people will carry over into this series.

Rated for adults due to graphic sex and violence

5 star review of Guts & Glory: Brick (In the Shadows Security #6) by Jeanne St James

Audio Review

The sixth book in the series and wow, I loved it. It was a fantastic addition to the series. I think I have a new favourite book boyfriend. Narrated by Teddy Hamilton and Ava Lucas who did a great job with the narration, I was engrossed in the storyline from the first to the last chapter and couldn’t wait to see what Ms. St James had in store for Brick and Londyn.
The chemistry and passion between them was off the charts and yet underneath you can feel the attraction and love that is building between them. I loved how feisty and sassy Londyn is and I fell hard and fast for Brick., he ticked all the boxes for me.
The story was well written, gritty, raw and the performances by Teddy and Ava really added to my overall enjoyment of the story. The banter between them had me laughing on numerous occasions as they embark on an undercover assignment and the suspense that is throughout the story added an additional layer.

Heartwarming

Brick and Lyndon what a match--a match made by the presence that be.
Brick is the last of the Shadows to find a match. To fall head over heals in love without even realizing it.
The theatrics they have while in Florida had me in stitches then as Brick was telling her about his time in Pakistan had my heart breaking.
It is no wonder our soldiers come back broken.
This is another fantastic book from Jeanne St. James and damn can't wait for the next series to hit

My heart is aching.....because of the beautiful story, because of the beautiful ending, because of the conclusion of this amazing series. Please let us see snippets of them in the future Jeanne St. James. You’ve written an imaginary world of caring, alpha men and passionate women who compliment and complete each other. I want to live in Shadow Valley. I want a home in that compound. I want to sit on my porch and drink my coffee and watch the children play and grow and sneak peeks at the guys doing their early morning runs. Thanks for hours and hours of reading enjoyment.

Brick is a man who has no commitments other than his job and his brotherhood. He was broken on his last mission before leaving the Navy SEALs and nothing can fix him. When he has been given a job where he has to pretend to be married to get the truth from an alleged murderer, he is convinced that he can keep his hands, and other body parts, to himself. He has no desire to be in a relationship and he knows that Londyn is strictly hands off because he has been warned to stay away by his Shadow brother Mercy. Little does he know that his promise before leaving for this job will be harder to keep than he thought.

Londyn has been hurt and let down again. Her future brother in-law does not want her at his house and her sister doesn’t show any signs of wanting her in the house either. She wants her close to home, but not in her home. When the opportunity comes up to work with Brick on the job to get information, she thinks it will give her something to do and will give her purpose. She made a promise to her sister that she would stay away from Brick in any romantic/sexual way because she has sworn off men. Little does she know that her promise will be much harder than she thought it would be as well.

These two are attracted to each other right away, but they fight it for a little bit. I loved these two. Brick is an easygoing guy who just wants to play when he’s not working, but Londyn is a challenge that he is not ready for. Londyn is a naturally inquisitive woman who is more than delighted to get answers from their neighbors to help Brick with his job. They both work to get under the others skin in the beginning and their back and forth is quite comical. I love the heat and passion that is sparking between them. I will never look at brownie batter the same ever again after reading this book either. This book had me laughing at these two, cringing at times, and crying at times, but through the entire story I hated to put the book down. I loved it and give it a 5-star review. I hate to see this series end, but I am so happy that I was able to read it. The men of In The Shadows Security are a great team and the women they each found are perfect for them and they are just as tough and dangerous as their men.

I feel like a broken record when I say I absolutely fell in love with another one of Ms. St. James' couples, but I can't help it. It's the truth! Londyn and Brick were such a fun couple. Before going any further I must say, while each book is a standalone I would recommend reading them in order. I would even go farther and say start with the Dirty Angels MC series. There are quite a few characters from those books who show up in this one. It will also help with the epilogue.

All the Shadows have their demons, but, oh my heart ached for Brick. What he has had to live with for many years is unimaginable. It's no wonder he was always swiping for a hookup not allowing himself to feel anything for anyone other than his brothers. From the moment Londyn busted into the warehouse it was evident he had met the match for his heart though. I loved his protective nature but also loved seeing a playful side come out.

Londyn (Rissa/Parris' sister) was a little lost and a lot broken hearted. But, she was a spitfire and had a lot of spunk. She was smart and level-headed, too. I really liked her! Londyn wanted a long-lasting love, something like what her parents had.

So, what could go wrong when a habitual swipe right playboy and a hopeless romantic, both with a strong attraction to each other, are thrown together in a house for a undercover assignment where they have to play husband and wife? Oh, and they had been ordered to keep their hands off each other. Yeah, right. Like that was going to happen. Sparks flew, and man, they were hot! Throw in a little danger and Brick and Londyn's story had it all.

But, boy oh boy, that epilogue! I was not expecting that!! Although it's something I had hoped for, I never thought I'd see the day. Not to mention the little peak into a future couple. Whew, that one's going to be good! That's all I'm gonna say on the matter. No spoilers here. If ya want to know what I'm talking about, I'd recommend reading both series.

Brick: Guts & Glory Review
Londyn is a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants impulsive woman. When her heart is broken by the man she moved halfway around the world for, she goes running for her sister. Interrupting a testosterone filled night, she disrupts Mercy and Rissa's routine.
Brick is a man who is used to swiping right/swiping left for his fun-filled nights. He is a one and done kind of man. Full of past regrets, he refuses to allow anyone into his life who might see who he truly is beneath his handsome face and stellar body.
When an opportunity comes to get Londyn out of the house and on a temporary assignment, Mercy grunts at the chance. Brick and Londyn are sent packing with the one rule stipulation: NO SLEEPING WITH THE OTHER PERSON! How hard can that be?
Turns out when heat, sexual tension, danger, and dominance are mixed together the temptation is just too much. Londyn and Brick explore the sensual and tantalizing sexual pull that is between them. But what happens when their assignment is over and they go back to the real world? Will Brick walk away and go back to his swiping lifestyle? Will Londyn get her heart broken once again?
Jeanne St. James has done it yet again! She takes two very unique, zany characters, throws in a powder keg of sexual tension, and their passion explodes onto the pages and into our world. I fell in love with Brick and Londyn. One of my favorite characters so far. The intricate way St. James balances the man who pretends to be just fine with the tragic hero he really is with the delicacy she does is truly outstanding. One of my favorite books of hers to date! I received a free copy of Guts & Glory: Brick in exchange for an honest review.

Guts & Glory: Brick
In the Shadows Security, Book 6
By: Jeanne St. James
Narrated by: Teddy Hamilton, Ava Lucas

I don't know where the ideas come from, but each book Jeanne St. James writes is original and exciting. Brick is a former Navy seal, now working for Diesel and Shadows Security. He is sent on a case with his pretend wife, Londyn with the distinct orders not to touch her. No problem for him, he isn't interested in a relationship, and they were on a mission. But the chemistry is palpable, the danger high and the tension to strong. Proving their target is a killer is the first priority, right? I absolutely love this couple. Brick appears to be carefree, but he has so many layers to him and Londyn gets to peel them away. Londyn is amazing. I think she is my favorite female of all the books. Resilient, loving and entirely too brave, she is ready to take on the world for her man. And the case they are on is exciting and suspenseful! I loved every minute of their journey. Then the surprise in the epilogue was just icing on the cake! Another fantastic book!

Ava Lucas and Teddy Hamilton bring the story to life. Lucas finds all the nooks and crannies to Londyn, giving her all the strength and passion to her. With her narration, the nuances carry her feelings and courage. Hamilton gives Brick complexity to his personality. From alpha male to fear to love, it's all there in his voice. A fantastic casting choice for this book, it's one you do not want to miss.

I cant believe this is the last book for the men of this group. (Disclaimer, this is a stand alone but there are relationships developed in previous books that will make it so much betterr to read.) Brick is the last man to find his HEA and he doesnt want one. He is considered the player of the guys since his relationships consist of "swiping right" through apps. He never sees a woman more than once. I loved the turn of this book. Londyn has the smartest mouth of all the women who have tamed these men. She made me laugh so hard at how she puts them all in their place without seeming to even try. The forced proximity between these two will lead to trouble but in the hottest of ways. She is Brick's perfect match and "swiping right" is all but forgotten while they together. Every one of these books has an element of suspence and running from the bad guys. This one though puts them literally right next door. I loved what Jeanne St James does with such a strong willed female character as Londyn. Not only is she real by having smart mouth, she has the body that fills out all the right boxes for Brick. Brick is as complicated as the come being a war veteran. Londyn accepts him for who he is and doesn't change him or force him to share. And that is just what he needs to realize he is worth more than his profession.

You heard the saying "lived up to the hype"? Well, this this final offering in author Jeanne St. James' Shadows series, our dear friend Brick not only lived up to the hype; it defined it. Let me start with the epilogue. I won't spoil it, but it made me swoon, get teary-eyed, laugh like an asthmatic hyena-piglet love child (ahem, again), and feel at peace knowing everything worked out for our crazy PA residents the way that it did. The epilogue also perfectly sets up the next series... but that's another story.

Brick. Oh, dear, dear Brick. This man. What he went through, the demons he's wrestled... No one deserves to go through that. He's tried to both lose and find himself in hook-ups and tried to have a home---build roots---with his brothers in arms. However, it wasn't until Londyn---yes, that is with a Y, thank you very much---that he built a home of his own. Ah, Londyn. Make no mistake: although she looks like her sister, she is no Rissa 2.0. She was her own beautifully broken yet soon to be slowly yet lovingly mended soul.

Just read this series. Just resign yourself to the fact that like with Pringle, once you read a St. James original, you cannot stop reading another one until you realize your eyes look like a panda's because you binge read for a weekend.

I’m fairly certain that I’ve said from the first “In The Shadows Security” book that Mercy is my favorite, and don’t get me wrong I still love the big man, but Brick is giving him some competition. From the first chapter this book had me cracking up and not wanting to put it down for anything until I read the last word...it’s that good! Brick is a “hit it and quit it” kind of guy, or in Steel’s words, “swipe right, wrap it tight and escape in the middle of the night. Keep it simple, right?” He doesn’t do relationships, he doesn’t do more than one night or even a full night and he’s not one bit ashamed of that fact. Enter Londyn, Rissa’s look alike younger sister who’s not nearly as put together as Rissa, but man is she fun! Throwing these two together on a work mission and sparks, clothing and everything in between fly. Loved this story, loved these characters, loved the interaction with the other Shadows guys and of course loved Diesel! Can’t say enough good about this book and the rest of the series and of course the Dirty Angels series too, truly amazing books! Thank you Ms St. James for sharing your incredible imagination with us, I look forward to your next book!

What a phenomenal ending to an outstanding series. This is the last installment for Guts & Glory In The Shadows Series. If you haven’t read them all, do yourself a favor and start from the beginning. You’ll be so happy that you did.
The elusive Brick - he’s funny, cocky and great at swiping right. Not looking for more than one night with any woman.
Londyn - she’s a pain in the butt for Mercy, her brother in law. Londyn makes a grand entrance and turns everyone’s life upside down.
A great opportunity presents itself to get Londyn out of Mercy’s hair and Brick is the lucky one who gets this assignment.
From the very beginning you can feel the energy between these two. The sparks start flying with the first meeting and it never stops.
Their adventure leads to so many realizations.
You’re gonna laugh, cry, swoon and cheer out loud while reading this. There is no way to keep your composure. Pure brilliance!
Very sad to see this series end, but it couldn’t of had a more epic ending. I will be reading this entire series many times over.
As always, Jeanne St James shares with us a true masterpiece.

I don't have enough words to describe how much I love this series or the interconnected MC brotherhood. Each member has felt like family. I was a little worried about this book because I struggled with the last two. That was partially because Ryder was my favorite but also because I didn't have the connection I had with the others. I need not have worried because this story was definitely a hit.

I loved Brick and Londyn. Their interactions we're both funny and insightful. I found myself smiling while reading. I felt Londyn's insecurities and I loved seeing him see herself through Brick's eyes but also in a fresh perspective of her own eyes.

The story felt a little rushed toward the end with a particular scene between me and the later has Brick and Londyn were hashing things out. But that surprise ending...and finally having what had always been common knowledge but never put into words? Yeah, that moved this book from a 4 to a five-star rating.

I'm sad to see this end but I'm sure these characters will make an appearance or two in the future. Regardless, I'll be waiting for whatever this author decides is next.

For a VERY long time, I knew that Ms. James could create a story that will pull me into it, even when I hadn't seen that...And this thing happened while reading Brick.
I started, then suddenly I was n the middle, and then epilogue - not sure how it had happened, but I was just starting and then suddenly - there was THE END... WoW
Brick - I was not sure if I will like him (like with most of the guys), as I think I can call him as someone with the label of notorious playboy so I was not sure how much will he loveable he will be here, and I found that there is MUCH more into him, then there was at the first sight (like always).
Londyn - is a woman that is not someone that is to be messed with. She's the sister of Rissa. And she's KICKASS, I love that she was strong, even with her insecurities and being a BBW and I FRICKING loved it!
Be ready to jump into a GREAT story that will bring you into it like a tornado and won't let go till the very end.
I will just add just this - be ready with tissues for the end as I was not prepared to read it in the tram! Just be warned!!

Brick is my new favorite, without a doubt. I know I say that every time about Jeanne's latest star character, but this time it's true beyond a doubt. I was on his side the whole way. From when he was the only Shadow who took a favorable view of Londyn upon her unexpected arrival to when he so cockily assumed he wouldn't get sent on the latest boring recon mission because he did not have a female partner. I was as surprised as Brick when Mercy partnered him with Rissa's sister Londyn and sent him off to sunny southern Florida with directions to keep his dick in his pants! Well, I knew that wasn't happening! What a joy it was to be stranded with these two good-natured, stubborn, smarties in a rented mansion spying on an 'alleged' killer and his new wife. PTSD mixes with ADHD impulsiveness with both thrills and heart-stopping danger! Jeanne tells the story just right as they pretend marriage fooling the neighbors and themselves! You know there'll be a HEA ending--but how will it happen: surprisingly as usual! Not to be missed.

This story surprised me!!

The final book in the Guts and Glory: In The Shadows Security is the story of Brick and Londyn (do you remember who she is??) I was so happy to see the return of this character and who her love interest was going to be.

I was hooked from the first chapter, it is quite funny and then goes from there. Of course Mercy is non too pleased that she has arrived to interrupt his life and he is hell bent on making sure she isn’t staying for a long time. Brick is intrigued with her and thinks he wants to get know her more...and oh yes he is going to get that chance on his next assignment.

I love how the author portrayed Londyn in this book, she has insecurities, she has doubts about herself being with a man like Brick. And how Brick didn’t even give in to how she felt, he was always positive towards her feelings even at time being her cheerleader telling her to buck up.

Oh, and the epilogue is just perfect, if you want to know what happens, you must read it. So good!!

Well Dayum Brick and Londyn soooooo good

The beginning of Brick's read had me giggling. Londyn crashing their poker night and Mercy losing his stuff. You can't help but laugh. But when Mercy and "D" decide to send Brick on a mission and he has to take Londyn as his fake wife the fun begins. Remember Brick is a one time wham bam thank you Ma'am and now he'll be spending two weeks or more with a woman he's attracted to and they have to fake being married. Londyn is not a wallflower and very head strong so you know how this mission is going to turn out. A few times I was yelling at her in my head for not listening to Brick. She put herself in danger when the mission was to be reconnaissance, that's all. Yeah didn't turn out that way. Oh did I mention they promised to keep their hands off each other, hmm let me know how that works out. So in the end our player realized his error letting Londyn go. Cute read totally enjoyed this series. OMG and the epilogue was totally unexpected. Next book is Magnum Dark Knights MC/DAMC crossover.

Wow! I don’t know what to say here. I’ve been waiting for Brick and here he is and his story is the last in this series. Brick shows everyone what he wants them to see, deep down he’s tormented by his past and when he and Londyn are thrown together to go undercover, she turns his life upside down in ways he never knew he wanted. Londyn is quirky, sassy and has a mouth on her, but they even out each other. Brick is a one and done kind of guy but Londyn is different. She's more than that and deserves better than what she’s had in the past. Londyn coming off a devastating relationship is attracted to Brick, but she’s totally off limits, but has that ever really stopped him before? Sparks fly, the energy between them sizzles, this is without a doubt my favorite story in this series. I loved them all but this one takes the cake. A great read you can’t miss out on. Loved it! I received a copy of this book.

Such a bittersweet moment finishing this book. As magnificent as it was to read, but knowing that this is the final book in this series had my emotions see-sawing.
One thing Jeanne has mastered is her ability to write the strongest heroine's I have ever read. Every female in this series has not only been fabulous to read, but they have all left me feeling I wished that they were actually women that I not only knew but could call friend.
Londyn was no exception. I think out of all the women, she was hands down the funnest & funniest. Brick didn't know what hit him, and I also think he didn't know that she was what had been missing in his life all along.
As normal, Jeanne has also thrown in a whole heap of action & suspense. But what she also excels at is that even though each book has had this, they are all unique.
Now fingers crossed that isn't too much of a wait for Jeanne's next series. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book

I received an advanced copy from the author for my honest review. Yet another amazing series by Jeanne is unfortunately coming to an end......and boy does she know how to end a series with a bang! Brick loves women as much as they love him, he's a no strings, swipe right kind of guy. Londyn has come to stay with her sister Rissa after finding out she has wasted the last few years on a lying douche canoe boyfriend. When a case comes up that calls for a "married couple" it is given to Brick. Mercy so graciously volunteers his future sister-in-law who he just so happens want out of his house as Brick's "wife". As Brick and Londyn work together playing man and wife to catch the bad guy it starts to feel kind of real, but it can't be real. Brick has demon's that no one knows about and he can't forget. All Londyn wants is love...real love, but she knows as the end of the assignment will be the end of their "love" Can something fake become real? A DEFINITE MUST READ!!!!!

Epic !

Jeanne St. James created an epic finale for the In the Shadows Security series.

This is Brick’s book .... and it was hella hot. Steamy. He’s the seemingly easy going, up for a good time, one out of the bunch. Deep down he was just as broken as the rest. Londyn was just the right woman for him. She took Brick by surprise and in his words “slayed him”. He fell hard and fast for her, but man did he fight hard against giving in .... just like the rest of the Shadows.
I really loved this adventurous romance. What am I talking about ? I’ve loved every book in this series, and the Dirty Angels too. I’m sad to say goodbye tho and hope like hell to catch up with my favs in the upcoming new series.

Just to say I freaking loved this book ! So give it a try. You will not be disappointed for sure.

Brick and Lyndon was such an incredible read and a really terrific way to end this series. This book offers a delightfully entertaining blend of drama, humor, emotion and intense. I felt that these were characters that were easy to love and feel for. I loved that there was so much going on beneath the surface image that these two projected. This made them very complex and relatable. The attraction, chemistry and banter that is generated with every interaction was elemental, sizzling and witty. Of course as this is the final book in this series we are treated to one last look at other beloved characters from the series. I'm sad to say goodbye but satisfied with how it did and I'm looking forward to what comes next from this author. This is my independent, impartial review.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this Book!!!!
This has been a truly amazing journey with not only the Guts and Glory guys but the DAMC too! I'm so sad so see it end but what a WONDERFUL story and couple to end with. I love Brick and Londyn. They are so fun and sexy together. They appreciate and accept each other and make a great couple! (and you will be craving Brownies after this too. LOL) There was also an element of danger through this story too as they try to catch a sneaky killer.
and OMG, the epilogue! Holy cow--what an AWESOME gift to all her readers. When I realized what was happening, I literally screamed right there in my living room. YES!!! Loved it.

Jeanne St James writes a helluva sexy book. I was glued to the pages and read it in one sitting. This is the conclusion of a series and I highly recommend reading the others but this can be a standalone. Brick is a typical JStJ alpha ex-military with a manwhore disposition. Londyn is the sister of a character in a prior novel. She’s tough, stands up for herself but desperately wants to find love. The two are thrown together for work reasons and sparks fly. I loved the chemistry between these two. And Brick isn’t nearly as hard-headed and stubborn as a lot of StJ heroes. Once he realizes that Londyn is it, he’s all in. The epilogue is bittersweet but the love story is nothing but steam and heart.
