About our application process

Applications for Fall 2023 are now closed for STEM and LEEP. We accept applications for Agriculture Education on a rolling basis.

Applicant Requirements:
  • 3.0 GPA or better 

  • Master’s degree or equivalent 

  • Significant experience in an educational setting in areas such as primary, secondary or post-secondary teaching, community education, leadership administration, or curriculum development.  

Applicants should demonstrate a strong connection with the research program of at least one faculty member in their application. See information about the individual options to learn about faculty research interests.

Applicants are not required to take the GRE or submit a GRE score report when applying. If applicants elect to submit GRE scores, the admissions committee will review the scores as part of the holistic evaluation process, but such applications will not be judged more or less favorably than applications submitted without GRE scores. More information on admissions requirements can be found on the Graduate School website.


How to Apply:

In order to apply for the Education PhD program, you must follow and complete the online application requirements for the Graduate School. Additional Graduate School Admissions information.

1. When beginning your application select the following:

  • Campus: Oregon State University (Corvallis, OR)

  • Major: Education

  • Choice of Specialization: Choose one of the following: Agricultural Education, Language, Equity and Educational Policy or Science/Mathematics Education

2. You will be required to answer the following questions in the online application. Your answers are very important for your application and should present a thoughtful response. See “Application Review Process” below for the evaluation criteria.

  • In the section Other Graduate Questions:
    Compose a statement of academic and career objectives. Be specific as possible about your proposed focus of study. Address your motivations for graduate study and briefly explain your overall preparation to enter your chosen field.

  • In the section Program Specific Questions:
    Detail the nature of your experience in the educational context of interest (e.g. public school, college teaching, community learning venue such as family centers, educational non-profit, or community-based organization). Based on your experience in this context, what issues/questions are you interested in investigating? Why are they relevant? (2-3 pages single spaced)

3. Current Resumé or C.V.

4. Writing Sample
Applicants should submit one example of academic or professional writing (e.g. something you have published, a master's thesis, or a paper that you submitted to fulfill graduate course requirements). The sample must have been authored exclusively by the applicant. The purpose is to demonstrate your ability to write analytical English prose. A reasonable sample will be about 10 pages, double-spaced.

5.Transcripts must include:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent 

  • All coursework: graduate and undergraduate. Please note that colleges and universities may take up to one month to send transcripts. Please plan accordingly.

  • Applicants from OSU academic programs do not need to submit official OSU transcripts.

  • Unofficial transcripts will be accepted for the initial application. If admitted, final official transcripts showing degrees earned from your postsecondary institutions must be received by the Graduate School prior to your first term.

6. Personal/Academic References
Identify 3 individuals willing to provide reference letters attesting to your academic and/or professional capacity. You will enter their email addresses in the application system. The individuals will be contacted via the online graduate application system and asked to submit reference letters. You will not upload reference letters in your application.

Ask references to respond quickly. Applications without all references will not be considered.

Application Review Process:

Applications are reviewed by a committee of faculty members. The review committee considers the following factors in assessing applicants:

  • Advanced coursework and/or experience in preparation for research.

  • Compatibility of applicant's stated professional goals with the objectives of the option’s and faculty’s research areas.

  • Strength of academic and professional education record.

  • Fluency in oral and written expression.

  • Potential to be a significant leader in social justice and educational equity.

  • Conformity with university and college admission requirements. 

Please note that a face-to-face or phone interview with a member of the Program Admissions Committee may be required prior to admission to the doctoral option.
