Details
On my previous visits to Long Pond, the steamer-ducks were far out on the pond. Today the group of 6 swam close to the edge of the pond, and the adult female was out of the water briefly. According to Jaramillo's Birds of Chile, the Flying Steamer-Duck is the only steamer-duck on fresh water. I am including photos that show the long upcurled tail of both the adult male and adult female in the water. The wings appear to be long. Like the Falkland Steamer-Duck, which we have seen many times along the coast, the male's bill was orange. But unlike the female Falkland Steamer-Duck, which has a dark greenish-yellow bill, the female's bill was orange at the base and bluish-green below the nostril. I was fortunate enough to see the female out of the water for a short time.
