Methodology: calculation of digital garment CO2 emission

We used Ericsson report 'A quick guide to your digital carbon footprint. Deconstructing Information and Communication Technology’s carbon emissions' (February 2020) as basis for the calculations of the carbon emissions of digital garments production phase.

 

 
 
Based on the annual data on CO2 emissions for each type of users from the report and the hours they spend per day using electronic devices, we were able to recalculate how much CO2 is emitted per hour per user. 
 
  • We assume that the process of creation a digital garment can be compared, in terms of the energy use, to playing games on a powerful gaming computer with a large screen:

 

 

  • We assume that 'dressing up' a client in a digital garment can be compared, in terms of the energy use, to an average user who uses a smartphone, laptop, and tablet during the day:

 


 

  • We assume that CO2 emissions for sending an email with a photo :
