Chris Matthews was a 1994 graduate of Magruder High School having played 4 years of varsity soccer at Magruder. Chris was totally dedicated to soccer and loved to play the sport with his teammates and friends. Serving as co-captain of the team for 2 years, he set the record at Magruder for the number of varsity starts. He primarily played defense although he loved the opportunity to play midfield and assist in many goals. During his tenure at Magruder, the team compiled a 28/15/5 record. Chris continued his soccer career at Frostburg State University where he also served as team captain and was affectionately known as “Wheels.” It’s clear that soccer was an important part of Chris’s life which tragically ended on November 15, 2015. It is recognition of his accomplishments and love of the game that the Chris Matthews Memorial Unsung Hero Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial support to offset a portion of college (professional school) costs for deserving “Unsung Hero” soccer players.
