In September 2018, the WAML Executive Board convened a task force with the goal of formalizing a mission statement for the organization. The task force members [Jessica Benner (Carnegie Mellon), Louise Ratliff (UCLA), Ken Rockwell (University of Utah), and Phil White (UC Boulder)] developed draft versions of WAML mission and vision statements, based on a survey of the membership.

Your feedback is now requested on these draft statements. Please share your perspective as we look toward the future of WAML!

First: What are Vision and Mission Statements?

A vision statement is statement of the ideal future the organization wants to aspire to, reach for, and be pulled towards by. It should be inspiring, exciting, and often is used as an organization’s tagline for branding purposes.

A mission is different from a vision in that the former is the cause and the latter is the effect” (businessdictionary.com, 2013). A mission statement is what you and the organization are trying to achieve and accomplish every day. It should be a rallying cry; something that would inspire you and “make it all worthwhile”; your mission is the current, here-and-now, stepping stones you must take to achieve your organization’s vision. It should be inspiring, exciting, and short enough to reasonably remember.

WAML is a forum for promoting excellence in the geospatial and map library profession by:

· Providing welcoming and inclusive space where professionals and enthusiasts alike can learn, share, thrive, and build expertise;

· Advocating for access to and preservation of geospatial data and collections;

· Invigorating the profession and keeping it relevant by adapting to advances in the field; and

· Developing and disseminating professional standards and best practices.

Next Steps

The WAML Executive Board will take all comments into consideration when discussing the statements at an upcoming board meeting. A final draft of the Vision and Mission Statements will be shared with the WAML membership for approval.
