CORE CLASSES

Language Arts

Math

Pre-Algebra

  • The Unit 13 Test on Transformations  is scheduled for 5/4 (A Day) or 5/5 (B Day).
  • Students must complete 5 topics in ALEKS per week.
  • Reminder: Use Schoology to see updated notes and SOL practice.

Algebra

  • Students will be learning about factoring polynomials and solving quadratics.  This content will be taught before the SOL and then reviewed and tested afterwards.  
  • The 2 optional Extra Credit Assignments in Desmos are due 05/18/22.
  • The Algebra 1 SOL Test is scheduled for Thursday, May 19, 2022.
  • Students should be completing 5 ALEKS topics each week.  All topics, including those for extra credit, are due June 10.  
  • Please check Schoology for your teacher’s specific schedule, updates, and reminders.

Geometry

  • Unit 14: Equation of a Circle will be brief and has the summative scheduled for 05/06/22 (A day) or 05/09/22 (B day).
  • The Geometry SOL Test is scheduled for Wednesday, May 18.
  • Please refer to the Unit Schedule in Schoology for notes, practice, videos, and schedule.  
  • Students should complete at least 5 topics in ALEKS each week.  All topics for the 4th quarter, including those for extra credit, are due June 10.

Science

Major Updates:

  • Speed & Motion Test grades are in Schoology and Phoenix. If your student is missing this test, please reach out to the teacher. Retake window for the Motions test closes Wednesday, May 11.
  • Work & Power Test: May 12 (A) and May 13 (B)
  • Students will be starting a Rube Goldberg design project the week of May 16. More details will be coming shortly!
  • Science 8 SOL: May 23

Classroom Connection:

  • We have just finished our exploration of Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion & forces! Students should be able to explain the 3 laws, what inertia is, and how mass and weight differ.
  • Our final units of the year are Work & Power and Waves!

Art

Art 8- Students are working on creating clay gnome figurines based off of  a visual artist of their own choosing! In sketchbook investigations this quarter we are doing a material investigation and trying out a variety of different materials in our sketchbook pages!

Intro Computer Science

Students will implement a program that accepts input values, stores them in named variables and produces expected outputs using Scratch.  Next, they will learn to build functions with parameters to organize code in Scratch and Python, making it easier to reuse.  Finally, students will learn to Pseudocode their projects prior to coding by deconstructing Capstone project #1 to use as an example.  

Computer Science Foundations

Currently, students are wrapping up their study of Python by completing the final Capstone Project to create a game called, ‘Catch the Falling Perfect Squares’.  Upon return from Spring Break students will embark on the next phase of their coding journey by vering on to the JavaScript pathway.  They will learn the basics of this computer programming language starting with Arithmetic Operators, Remainder/Modulo Operators, and variables expressing both Numbers (Integers and Decimals), and Strings (Text) values.  Additionally CSF classes will delve into the world of Digital Data, exploring various forms of collection, expression and manipulation in their online world.  

FACS

  • It’s Flour Baby time!! We have been learning about various parenting styles and parenting readiness to prepare. A Day students will bring home babies on Friday, 4/29 and B day students will bring them on Thursday, 5/5!!
  • Students will also begin a child development unit in the coming week!

Health/PE

Students are completing workout routines to prepare for upcoming fitness testing in the Aux gym. Students continue to play team handball in the main gym. In Health, students are completing Everfi lessons on managing emotions and communicating effectively.

Spectrum

8th graders have completed the brainstorming for their team’s Lunar Future City through the development of a Google Site.  Now it’s time to make the city come to life!  Students chose a part of their city to design  via a blueprint, computer model, or 3-D model.  Topics chosen include:  housing, transportation, food production, healthcare, government, entertainment, etc.  They have planned out some basic information on how their topic uses moon resources, innovative technologies, protects against moon hazards, and includes unique features.  They will begin the process of designing their visuals this week.  I can’t wait to see the results!  

Students should be checking their end of week “weekly updates” in Schoology to help them stay on top of things:)

Students are using their skills they have learned in the production lab and creating their own Carnival Games.  They will measure, cut, construct and paint their games.

4th Quarter: please encourage your students to stay focused with their studies at home and in class to finish the year strong! We are finishing up a unit on family and sports and will start our last unit on the verb To Go and Places in the Community. 4 major summatives will be completed by May 18th and then the EOY project ( oral and written) will begin.
