CORE CLASSES

Language Arts

  • Students continue to develop a deeper understanding within their reading materials and the world around them through the exploration and analysis of character traits, theme and tone/mood.
  • Students will be given a summative to demonstrate their knowledge and ability to identify and analze character traits and theme later this month.
  • Students will also begin writing their narrative stories implementing the skills they have learned within this first quarter. This story will count towards second quarter grade.
  • Students continue to study word parts using assigned vocabulary words throughout this year.

Math

Pre-Algebra

  • Students took their summative on Unit 2 this week.
  • Unit 3: Evaluating Algebraic Expressions and Simple Interest will begin on 10/3(A Day) or 10/4(B Day)
  • Study Guide for Unit 3 is due in class on Monday 10/17(A Day) or Tuesday, 10/18(B Day)
  • Summative will take place on Wednesday, 10/19(A Day) or Thursday, 10/20 (B Day)
  • We are currently halfway through the quarter, please be sure your student is continuing with strong study habits and reviewing their notes and activities each night.
  • Please encourage your student to check the Assignment sheet and calendar in Schoology frequently.

Algebra

  • Students have completed lessons on Evaluating Expressions, Solving Multi-Step Equations, and Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides.
  • Next lesson is on solving Literal Equations.
  • A Study Guide is now available on the Schoology Assignment Sheet
  • Our Unit 1 Summative is scheduled for September 22 (A Day)and September 23 (B Day)
  • Looking ahead:  Unit 2 will begin the week of September 26.  Unit 2 begins with Functions and defining Slope.

Geometry

  • Fundamentals of geometry. Points, lines, and planes. Complementary and Supplementary angles, linear pair, logical statements.
  • Next lesson is on parallel lines and angles made by a transversal. Study material for the summative is reviewed in class as well as posted on Schoology.
  • Some students are not reviewing at home and they also forget to bring supplies and math notebook class. Please encourage students to come prepared for class

Foundations of Algebra- Toppen, Kling, Sathuluri

  • Students have completed Unit 1 on exponents, perfect squares, square roots, power of ten, and scientific notation and grades are now posted in ParentVue and StudentVue.
  • Students are now working on Unit 2 Comparing and Ordering Rational Numbers. The Unit 2 Summative will be on 10/06 (A-Day) and 10/07 (B-Day).
  • The Unit 2 Study Guide should be worked on throughout the unit, checked with the answer key in Schoology, and is due on 10/06 (A-Day) and 10/07 (B-Day).
  • Grades on individual assignments can be found by using these directions: How to Find Grades/Missing Work
  • Please use Tutor.com found in Schoology if additional help is needed. This is a great resource provided by LCPS!

Reeve, Petsch, Shirk

  • Unit 2: Scientific Notation and Comparing/Ordering Scientific Notation is currently in full swing.  .  
  • Study Guide for Unit 2 is due in class on Monday, 10/3(A Day) or Tuesday, 10/4(B Day)
  • Summative will take place on Thursday,10/6(A Day) or  Friday, 10/4 (B Day)
  • Unit 3 will begin on 10/11A Day) or 10/12 (B Day) and will focus on comparing and ordering rational numbers

Science

  • We are beginning to work with microscopes this week as an introduction to our unit on cells.
  • Students recently finished their Scientific Investigation Summative related to the earthworm lab. Summative grades are posted on StudentVue/ParentVue.
  • The Characteristics of Living Things summative occurred this past week and grades will be updated in StudentVue/ParentVue next week.
  • As a reminder, students that are eligible for a retake can complete the form linked in the red “Important Information Center” folder on Schoology.

Social Sciences

  • Starting 9/27 we will be covering Jim Crow, and then on 10/6 students will begin learning about westward expansion in the later half of the nineteenth century. Specifically, our focus has been on the impact that the Homestead Act and Transcontinental Railroad had on the United States. Students will take their 3rd summative on this topic later on during the week of Thursday 10/13 (A-Day) and Friday 10/14 (B-Day). Students will work to complete the westward expansion study guides during class on Tuesday and Wednesday. As with previous summatives, students will have access to their study guides during the summative.
  • Looking ahead, we will discuss the impact that expansion westward had on American Indians in the United States. We anticipate giving our 4th summative of the quarter 10/21 Aday, 10/25 B day. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
