COUNSELING

Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

/ Second Step

During the month of November, your student will be participating in discussions on thoughts, emotions, and decisions during Compass SEL lessons. Students will learn how to recognize strong emotions and unhelpful thoughts and apply strategies to manage their emotions and reduce stress. See below for a follow-up discussion you can have with your student at home.

8th Grade

Your child will examine how they feel, what thoughts they have, and how their body responds when they’re stressed. They will learn where stress comes from, identify stressors in their life, and examine which stressors they can control.

  • Practice: Ask your child what they do or feel when they’re stressed. These signs will help you notice when your child is stressed, so you can ask them how to help or support them. Ask your child if they have any stressors they can’t control. Discuss what they do have control over.

Counseling Update

Last month the Department of Teaching & Learning visited Trailside to inform students about the various Special Programs and Academies available to rising 9th grade students. These programs include our International Baccalaureate® Program, Health and Medical Sciences (HAMSci) Academy, and the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC).

To learn more about our IB Program or HAMSci Academy we encourage you and your students to attend any of the upcoming interest meetings. Current 8th-grade students who are interested in the IB Program or HAMSci Academy can begin to submit their interest in the Student Opportunities portal starting on December 1, 2023, through January 31, 2024. Students who show interest in either program will be placed in a lottery and will be notified if they are selected in March.
