CORE CLASSES

Language Arts

Math

Pre-Algebra

  • We are currently working through Unit 11:  Perimeter and Area of Composite Figures.  Our Summative will take place on Tuesday, March 22nd (A Day) and Wednesday, March 23rd (B Day).
  • Students should be accessing the Assignment Sheet/Schoology frequently for updates, copies of completed notes and additional resources to support learning.
  • ALEKS topics for the 3rd quarter have started, be sure students are completing a minimum of 5 topics a week.  All topics for the 3rd quarter will need to be completed on or before Friday, April 8th.

Algebra

  • We are currently working in Unit 11, Laws of Exponents.  
  • Students need to check their student assignments in Schoology to verify dates for the Unit 11 Summative and Spiral Mini-Quizzes.  
  • Students should be accessing the Assignment Sheet/Schoology frequently for updates, copies of completed notes and additional resources to support learning.
  • Reminder to complete at least 5 ALEKS topics each week.

Geometry

  • Geometry students are wrapping up Unit 11 on Quadrilaterals.
  • Unit 12 will focus on Polygons. This is the last summative of the 3rd quarter; it is tentatively scheduled for 03/30/22 (A day) or 03/31/22 (B day).
  • Remember to check your Unit Schedule in Schoology for dates, notes, answer keys, videos, and much more!
  • Students should be completing at least 5 topics in ALEKS each week.

Algebra 2-Trig.

  • A2 will review for the unit 8 test on March 11 and the test will be on March 15.

Science

Major Updates:

  • Unit 12 Electricity & Magnetism test will be on Thursday, Mar. 24 (A-day) and Friday, Mar 25 (B-day). Students can find several resources to study and prepare in Schoology.
  • The unit 11 Thermal Energy test scores are now posted in StudentVue. Students wishing to do a retake should fill out the request form.

Classroom Connection:

  • Circuits: Ask your student which circuit project/build was their favorite in the lab
  • Magnets: Ask your student what happens when a magnet is broken
  • Electromagnets are all around us: Explore places in your house and everyday life where you use electromagnets!

Social Sciences

  • We started our project on Political Campaigns and the Role of the Media this week.
  • Students are working as interns for a political organization in which they are reviewing polling data, analyzing GIS maps with key demographic data, and making recommendations for appropriate target audiences for campaign messaging.
  • The focus is not on ideology, but rather the campaign process, as well as the role the media plays in it.
  • And of course, we’re focused on reading texts of all kinds closely, making claims that are based on evidence, and explaining our thinking clearly.

ENCORE CLASSES

Art

Art 8/SHIRK- Students are heading into realistic drawing using graphite. They will be using  the grid transfer method in order to create photorealistic drawings!  

During sketchbook investigations they are continuing their exploration into different ways sketchbooks can be used to express their own ideas!

3D design/SHIRK- We are finishing off the quarter with plaster! Students are taking the starting point of an art supply, and then transforming it into a sculpture in the round that demonstrates the design principle of MOVEMENT! Sketchbook investigation continues with their explorations of different ways to approach using a sketchbook as a tool for self expression!  

Band

Chorus

  • Congratulations to 8th Grade Chorus for receiving straight Superior scores from all 4 judges at Assessment! They sang so beautifully and performed with commitment and energy. They should be so proud of themselves and all of their hard work!
  • We will be working on reading sixteenth note patterns in our rhythms and High Ti and High Do in our melodies.
  • We will continue to work on “Bonse Aba” and start “Sisi Ni Moja.”

Intro Computer Science

Students will implement a program that accepts input values, stores them in named variables and produces expected outputs using Scratch.  Next, they will learn to build functions with parameters to organize code in Scratch and Python, making it easier to reuse.  Finally, students will learn to Pseudocode their projects prior to coding by deconstructing Capstone project #1 to use as an example.  

Computer Science Foundations

Students use their knowledge of functions to create scenes in a story by calling a different function.  Next they will create functions to create a dance routine in both Python and Scratch.  Finally, students will use parameters to start customizing their function output based on an input or set of input values.

FACS

Health/PE

  • Students are completing workout routines in the Aux gym. Students have begun basketball skills in the main gym. In Health, students have completed the Advertising project and will begin the unit on Nutritional Dieting.

Orchestra

  • Shifting basics summative will occur the week before spring break
  • We will begin to rehearse TimberWolfTrap concert music beginning 3/22 (performance in late May)
  • Please continue to ensure that your student is practicing every day, for 20-30 minutes

French 1

Touijar

  • Right now students are learning a new Unit 3 B, Comment sont-ils? Vocabulary related to professions, occupations and character traits.
  • We will have a Major Summative Unit 3B
  • I introduced Project # 3: La famille, the directions are posted on Schoology.
  • It will be due on March 25, 2022.

  • Right now students are learning a new Unit 7 B, l’hotel. Students will learn, and practice vocabulary related to hotels, how to book a hotel room with any accommodations, ordinal numbers and sequencing events.
  • We will have a Major SummativeUnit 7B
  • Couple of weeks ago I introduced a new project: “Les pays francophones”. Requirements are available on Schoology. As always, they have at least 6 weeks to work on it. Please make sure they don’t wait for the last minute to do it.
  • It will be due on March 25, 2022.

German 1

Kluber

  • Students have been discussing and sharing their hobbies and interests. Next week and beyond we'll be discussing the importance of some of these hobbies in German culture.
  • Our next Major Summative, a Show and Tell Presentation, will be on Tuesday Feb. 22. Students will need to present about their hobbies without reading off of notes.

Kluber

Students have just completed our mini-unit about the past tense and have just started our main Q3 unit about traveling. Students will learn how to discuss steps when a planning a trip to a German speaking country.

The first Major Summative of the quarter, the Past Tense Project, was due on Thursday Feb. 17. Please confirm with your child that they have it submitted.

Spanish 1

De Leon

  • Students have just completed the unit on the theme of school and the classroom. We are starting a new unit on food: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Please check the homework schedule with your child for assignments and upcoming summatives. Extra credit has been uploaded in Schoology. Due date is March 18th. 3/16: We are wrapping up the unit on Dinner. Students are practicing for their upcoming essay and speaking minor summatives.
