CORE CLASSES

Language Arts

  •  Students are continuing to complete their research plans to prepare for their Debates on 4/1 and 4/4.
  • Students should finish up to the Counter Argument section of their research plan before Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Math

Pre-Algebra

  • This week we will start on Unit 12:  Volume and Surface Area of Cones and Pyramids.  A Day students will take their summative on Tuesday, April 5 and B day students will take their summative on Wednesday, April 6th
  • Students should be accessing the Assignment Sheet/Schoology frequently for updates, copies of completed notes and additional resources to support learning.
  • Be sure students are completing a minimum of 5 ALEKS topics a week.  All topics for the 3rd quarter will need to be completed on or before Friday, April 8th.

Algebra

  • Algebra 1 students are wrapping up the Unit on Radicals.  The Radicals Summative will count for the 4th Marking Period.
  • Our next unit is on Polynomial Operations.  Check Schoology for the exact date of the summative.
  • Notes, practice problems, answer keys, and videos are available in Schoology.  Take advantage of these amazing resources.
  • Students are expected to complete a minimum of 5 topics each week in ALEKS.  All topics (including those being used for Q3 extra credit) are due by 3:30PM on Friday, April 8, 2022.
  • Geometry is beginning Unit 13: Circles.  The summative is scheduled for 04/27/22 (A day) or 04/28/22 (B day).
  • Notes, practice problems, answer keys, and videos are available in the Unit Schedule on Schoology.  Take advantage of these amazing resources.

Major Updates:

  • All MP3 summative grades are now in Student & ParentVue.
  • Final retakes must be done by FRIDAY, April 8.
  • Extra Credit options for quarter 3 are due by MONDAY, April 4
  • Motions Test (MP4): Apr. 5 (A) and Apr. 6 (B)

Classroom Connection:

  • Our final units this year (!!!) will focus on motion and forces. We began exploring motion in different forms this past week.
  • Ask your students to explain the difference between speed, velocity, and acceleration.
  • Math connection: in a distance-time graph, speed is found using rise over run. Ask your student what this is called in math!

Intro Computer Science

Students will implement a program that accepts input values, stores them in named variables and produces expected outputs using Scratch.  Next, they will learn to build functions with parameters to organize code in Scratch and Python, making it easier to reuse.  Finally, students will learn to Pseudocode their projects prior to coding by deconstructing Capstone project #1 to use as an example.  

Computer Science Foundations

Currently, students are wrapping up their study of Python by completing the final Capstone Project to create a game called, ‘Catch the Falling Perfect Squares’.  Upon return from Spring Break students will embark on the next phase of their coding journey by vering on to the JavaScript pathway.  They will learn the basics of this computer programming language starting with Arithmetic Operators, Remainder/Modulo Operators, and variables expressing both Numbers (Integers and Decimals), and Strings (Text) values.  Additionally CSF classes will delve into the world of Digital Data, exploring various forms of collection, expression and manipulation in their online world.  

FACS

  • FACS 8 students will be working on several “Lead4Change” lessons and will ultimately be selecting and participating a 2nd service project. Throughout the process, students will reflect on personal experiences and the skills they possess that will assist in the development of the service project.  The goal will be to complete the project during Q4.
  • Upon returning from Spring Break, we will begin our Parenting/Child Development unit.  Students will evaluate parenting styles, explore the different areas of child development and will complete both the Flour Baby project as well as creating a preschool lesson plan.

Health/PE

  • Students are continuing workout routines and fitness games in the Aux gym. Students have begun basketball games in the main gym. In Health, students are working on the Nutrition Plan project.

Spectrum

8th Grade Spectrum students are working on designing a Google Site for their Future Lunar City.  This involves brainstorming about many features of their future city including:  location (benefits and drawbacks), citizens, entertainment, housing, economics, services (healthcare, education, government, communication, food production, exercise), transportation, and technology.  They will also write a brief history of their city.  

After break, they will work with their teams to choose an individualized part of their city for which to create a model/blueprint/design.  

They have also been developing their deductive reasoning through solving some higher level logic problems:)

Tech Ed

  • Students have been hard at work making a candy dispenser out of wood.  They have to figure out how to make the candy come out when they want a piece but then stop the rest from falling out.  It is amazing seeing how creative they are and what great problem solvers they are becoming.

  • Students have been discussing and sharing their hobbies and interests. Next week and beyond we'll be discussing the importance of some of these hobbies in German culture.
  • Our next Major Summative, a Show and Tell Presentation, will be on Tuesday Feb. 22. Students will need to present about their hobbies without reading off of notes.

Kluber

Students have just completed our mini-unit about the past tense and have just started our main Q3 unit about traveling. Students will learn how to discuss steps when a planning a trip to a German speaking country.

The first Major Summative of the quarter, the Past Tense Project, was due on Thursday Feb. 17. Please confirm with your child that they have it submitted.
