Shelter Information:

Shelter space is extremely limited and all other means of evacuation and sheltering should be considered before going to a public shelter.

In the event of a hurricane, a shelter might be opened. Check local media and this website to verify if a shelter is open.

Shelters will have limited amounts of space and supplies. It is best to bring sanitizing supplies if you have them.

Bring cloth face coverings for immune-compromised individuals.

Public shelters do not have cots or bedding and you will have limited space.

Bring blankets and jackets in case the shelter is very cold.
Pets are ALLOWED with the following requirements:

registered with this form (bring this form to the shelter),

A carrier or crate sufficient for the size of their pet. (Pet must be able to stand up in the carrier or crate and turn around without being cramped.)

Enough Pet food and water for 3 days. (If canned food is to be fed, you must supply a can opener.)

Food and water bowls for their pet.

Any medications needed and instructions.

A leash
-
A collar
-
Your pet’s vaccination records. NO PET WILL BE ADMITTED WITHOUT PROPER VACCINATIONS.

If you are sheltering a cat you must have a 10-pound bag of litter and a litter box and a litter scoop.

Any comfort items the pet may need such as blankets, towels, flea spray, toys, or grooming supplies. (Brush or comb)

The DeSoto County Special Needs Program is for residents who have a special need, have pre-registered, and are available at no cost. It provides shelter from a storm or hurricane for those who live in a home that is not safe, and have no other place to go. Only basic medical assistance and monitoring will be available.
THINGS TO KNOW:
- You must update your application every year.
- WE STOP processing applications when DeSoto County enters the five-day forecast cone of a storm, so submit your application early in the season.
- Service animals only are allowed in the Special Needs Shelter. (If your pet is not a service animal, you must make boarding arrangements prior to going to the shelter or your pet will be boarded at the Animal Services Department.)
- Service animals must have vaccination records. You must provide their food, water, leash, and litter box.
WHAT TO BRING:
A CAREGIVER MUST ACCOMPANY YOU and be able to:
- Assist you with all activities of daily living, including dressing and toileting
- Lift you to/from the toilet, cot, or wheelchair as needed
- Assist you with walking and/or eating
- Assist with medication and monitor oxygen usage
Special Needs Shelter space is limited. Bring to the shelter things you need to survive, including:
- Medical equipment- Oxygen supplies, incontinence supplies, c-pap, wheelchair, scooter, walker, cane, etc.
- FOOD AND WATER, and special dietary foods, in a cooler, as special diets cannot be provided. There is no refrigeration space for food and only limited space for medications.
- Two weeks' supply of medication, as well as a list of all medications.
- Clothing and personal hygiene items for up to three days.
- Sleeping bag, blanket, pillow, etc.
- List of names and phone numbers of emergency contacts and doctors.

- To receive important information from local emergency management officials about evacuation.
- Applications will not be accepted when DeSoto County enters a five-day storm forecast.

Completion of an application does not guarantee the availability of a shelter or medical treatment during an event. Whenever possible, alternate plans for evacuation that do not include public shelter should be made.
