The Michigan Department of Treasury is proud to announce the expansion of the MI Classroom Heroes COVID-19 Grants to include a new grant program for specific program teachers.
Under the latest grant opportunity, eligible Great Start Readiness Program (GRSP), Head Start, adult education and young adult (ages 18-26) special education teachers can receive a grant of up to $500. A supplemental signed by Governor Whitmer at the end of 2020 provides $2.5 million for the grant program.
To help combat the spread of COVID-19, Governor Whitmer on April 2, 2020, signed an executive order that suspended in-person instruction of students and provided limited and temporary relief from certain requirements so instruction could continue through alternative methods during the public health crisis.
The GRSP, Head Start, Adult Education, and Young Adult Special Education COVID-19 Teacher Grant Program was created in state law to recognize the additional time and additional costs specific program teachers in a school district or nonprofit nonpublic school spent to ensure learning continued when in-person instruction was suspended in last spring.
Full-time and part-time specific program teachers in a school district or nonprofit nonpublic school classroom during the 2019-2020 school year prior to the suspension of in-class activities are eligible.
To receive up to $500, specific program teachers must have performed at least of 75% of their standard instruction workload in brick-and-mortar classrooms during the last school year prior to the suspension of in-person instruction on April 2, 2020.
The state Treasury Department will be working directly with districts, nonprofit nonpublic schools, and other partners in the education community to implement this grant program and distribute grant dollars to recipients. Some key dates for school administrators to remember are:

March 19: School districts and nonprofit nonpublic schools to distribute Teacher Certification From 5741 for the GSRP, Head Start, Adult Education and Young Adult Special Education Teacher COVID-19 Grant Program to eligible specific program teachers. School entities must also post notice on their websites and at least one other means of communication to inform eligible grant recipients that they have been identified and provide an opportunity for written appeal of eligibility status.

April 9: Eligible specific program teachers must return Form 5741 to their school district or nonprofit nonpublic school in the form and manner instructed by school personnel. This is also the deadline for individuals to file an appeal to their school.

April 19: Deadline for school districts and nonprofit nonpublic schools to electronically submit their eligibility list to the Michigan Department of Treasury.

June 4: Checks will be sent from the Michigan Department of Treasury to eligible specific program teachers on or about June 4.
