How to Avoid February Frustration &

March Madness

Dear Educators,

In February, we should always be intentional about restating expectations for students. We should also focus on following through with students whenever they're out of bounds, so students know that adults mean what they say.

Additionally, at this time of year, we need to lean on one another for support – especially while working with some of our most challenging students!

To help each other make it to spring break, here are some questions to reflect on:

Frontloading Expectations:

  • Do I remind students of the expectations prior to each event?
  • Are my expectations clear prior to an activity or transition?

Early Intervention:

  • Am I aware of behavior that might interfere with the learning environment?
  • Am I stopping it when I see it, or waiting until I feel frustrated to address it?

Caring Confrontation:

  • When redirecting behavior, is my redirect quick, kind, calm, firm, and close?
  • Does my redirect reduce student resistance?

Following Through:

  • Do I give one verbal redirect per activity and then take action?
  • Can students trust that I will expect the best of them and help them achieve that?

BIST Leadership Conference Offers Hope, Camaraderie, and Vision for School Leaders

In January, 110 school principals, building leaders, and district leaders gathered for the two-day BIST Leadership Conference at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kansas City. It brought together school leaders from 71 schools in 26 school districts from five states. Together, they had dynamic conversations about how to support students in the classroom.

“I cannot express enough how much I loved the BIST Leadership Conference,” said Allison Spencer, a principal at Sunny Point Elementary in Blue Springs, Mo. “It’s rare to receive leadership professional development. Not only was this such great info to review and learn, but the timing of it being in January is perfect.”
