Virtual Summer 2023 PL Courses

It’s time to register for the AFT’s virtual Professional Development courses held this summer!

This year, we are offering three train-the-trainer virtual courses and one participant-only virtual course. It will be mandatory for participants in the train-the-trainer courses to attend all sessions and complete all assignments to be considered ready to train the course in their locals.

For the participant-only course, we estimate a 20-hour commitment and will issue certificates to participants who complete the course. Participants may also have the opportunity to pursue continuing education graduate credit through Trinity College.

We hope these options will be a benefit to your local, and we look forward to working with you.

Reclaiming Assessment: Using a Balanced Classroom Assessment System to Strengthen Student Learning
Join us for an interactive, practical look inside your classroom assessment practices and delve into how personal biases can affect classroom practice. Fair and equitable assessments give teachers useful data on their students that improves instruction. In this 20-hour train-the-trainer course, we will discuss the difference between testing and assessment and develop a better understanding of the many different types of data and what they can and should not be used for. You will practice shifting your classroom assessments so they are culturally responsive, non-biased, valid and reliable.

10 Trauma-Informed Strategies to Help Students Heal

From August 21 - September 25, AFT will virtually host the "Student Trauma" course, 10 Trauma-Informed Strategies to Help Students Heal. Participants in this graduate-level, interactive professional learning will learn about and practice 10 research-based trauma-informed practices to boost student resilience. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how adversity can impact children’s developing brains, bodies and behaviors. They will also explore universal primary prevention (Tier 1) strategies that promote healing after various traumatic events. This is not a training of trainers.

There are three primary modes of engagement for participants: real-time sessions via Zoom on Monday and Wednesday evenings, 7 - 8:30p eastern (excluding Labor Day) for five consecutive weeks; an aligned AFT eLearning community webpage where "Home Play" assignments are mostly readings and paired discussion questions; a workbook and select other resources, that AFT ships for participants to keep. The course concludes with a Capstone assessment of 20 questions on eLearning. Altogether, the union estimates a 20-hour commitment and issues certificates to participants who complete the course. Participants may also have the opportunity to pursue continuing education graduate credit through Trinity College. Facilitators will accept up to 35 participants; after that point, interested registrants will be placed on a waitlist.
