WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Florida Power & Light has awarded 10 South Florida high school graduates with a $20,000 scholarship.
The recipients were surprised with the news at an event on Saturday morning.

The 10 recipients were:
- Isaac Valeris from Pompano Beach. Isaac is attending Broward College for a degree in Computer Engineering.
- Alfonzo L. Yates from Pompano Beach. Alfonzo is attending North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T), where he will pursue a career in Visual Design.
- Christopher D. Williams from Davie. Christopher committed to University of Florida and plans to pursue a career in Computer Engineering.
- Seth A. Solomon from Broward County. Seth will be attending N.C. A&T in the fall to pursue a career in Physics and aims to create innovative solutions for long-term climate change issues.
- Sarah Habona from Parkland. Sarah will be pursuing Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
- Shon L. Barthell from Hialeah. Shon will attend Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering, hoping to one day work for NASA.
- Mia L. Handfield from Opa Locka. Mia has committed to Tennessee State University in pursuit of a dental career, and hopes to provide dental services for underserved communities.
- Jordon D. Robinson from Broward County. Jordon will attend N.C. A&T and pursue a career in Graphic Design.
- Zoe O. McCrae from Royal Palm Beach. Zoe will be attending the University of Miami to pursue a career in healthcare.
- Malik A. Henry from Lake Worth. Malik plans to pursue a career in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Central Florida.
The NextEra Energy Scholarship for Black Students in SECME is a merit award that rewards college-bound high school seniors with a minimum one year of experience volunteering in the Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering that are enrolling in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited college or university. The scholarship provides $5,000 per year up to four years.
