New City volunteer program collecting kitchen kits for new, permanent housing for those who have experienced long-term homelessness

SALT LAKE CITY – Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall’s Office has launched SLC Corps, a new volunteer program with a mission to channel City resources, connect with community partners and mobilize volunteers to enhance the community’s quality of life.

SLC Corps’ first project is partnering with the Road Home to collect kitchen supplies for the 65 people who will reside at The Magnolia, a new permanent supportive housing complex for individuals who have experienced long-term homelessness.

“Our residents can look to SLC Corps as a venue to connect through rewarding service opportunities that align with our goals to create a stronger and more equitable city,” said Mayor Mendenhall. “This first project will benefit some of our neighbors as they settle into their very own place.”

Volunteers that want to participate in the SLC Corps project with The Magnolia can register to build a kit at https://x.gldn.io/URP9wO7NAfb. An Amazon registry has been set up with a complete list of items needed, but items can be purchased from anywhere. Individual items will also be accepted. Volunteers are asked to make sure all items are placed together in a box or plastic bin.

The new or gently used items can be dropped off at a drive-thru event on Saturday, June 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Magnolia on 165 S. 300 East.

Salt Lake City assisted in the development of The Magnolia through a $1.5 million Housing Trust Fund loan and a $12-a-year land lease. The complex, which is scheduled to open this summer, is one of many efforts to increase access to affordable housing in the city and support unsheltered individuals. It will be operated by the Road Home and will offer on-site services to assist people transitioning out of a shelter and into housing.
