LAFC-LA Galaxy Delivers ESPN’s Best MLS Cup Playoffs Audience in Five Years

Thursday night’s Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs Western Conference Semifinal between LAFC and cross-town rivals LA Galaxy averaged 496,000 viewers (P2+), making it the most-watched MLS Cup Playoffs match on an ESPN English-language network in five years – since the LA Galaxy vs. Seattle Sounders Western Conference Final second leg match (573,000 viewers, 11/30/14).

The match started on ESPN2 and moved to ESPN for the final 95 minutes in the programming window, where it averaged 586,000 viewers.

On ESPN Deportes, the average audience of 375,000 viewers makes LAFC-LA Galaxy the most-watched MLS match ever on the 24-hour Spanish-language sports network.

Overall, the game averaged a combined 871,000 viewers across ESPN2/ESPN and ESPN Deportes, making it the most-viewed MLS Cup Playoff game (not including the MLS Cup title game) on record. The previous most-viewed MLS Cup Playoff match was the Houston Dynamo vs. LA Galaxy Western Conference Final (11/13/09) seen by 822,000 viewers across ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes. (ESPN Deportes became a Nielsen-rated network in 2008)

Top-10 markets for LAFC-LA Galaxy: Los Angeles (1.5), Seattle-Tacoma (1.3), Albuquerque (1.0), Birmingham, Ala. (0.8), Atlanta (0.7), Oklahoma City (0.6), St. Louis (0.6), Portland, Ore. (0.6), San Diego (0.6) and Las Vegas (0.5).

Through the semifinals, three 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs matches on ESPN/ESPN2 have averaged 376,000 viewers, an increase of 17 percent (vs. 275,000 viewers for five playoff matches on the same networks in 2018).

Four live ESPN Deportes playoff matches in 2019 have averaged 146,000 viewers, a 265 percent increase from 40,000 viewers for the same number of matches in 2018.
