Fellowship Mentors

Fellowship Mentors

Thank you for your interest in becoming an art, science, humanities, and/or engineering mentor for the Interdisciplinary Student Fellowship Program at Oregon State University. Please use the form linked below the mentor descriptions to tell us about your research or artistic work by March 17, 2023.

About Student Fellowships: The Interdisciplinary Student Fellowships provide opportunities that encourage interdisciplinary thinking and creative work. In 2023-24, we will be offering 28 fellowships for graduate and undergraduate students. Applicants will choose from four fellowship tracks: Art+Science, Art+Engineering, Humanities+Science, or Film+Science. Fellows will be awarded $1,000, ongoing networking opportunities and mentorship, and will be eligible to apply for a residency at the Cabin at Shotpouch Creek to work on their project. Please click here to learn more about the fellowships.

About Student Fellowship Mentors: We are looking for artists, writers, musicians, humanities scholars, scientists, and engineers—from both OSU and the community—who are willing to serve as mentors for this year-long student experience (spring 2023 - spring 2024). Mentors will attend an orientation reception on the afternoon of Friday, April 28, and will work with a student (or students, if so desired) at least once a month to help them develop their project.

  • Art mentors: We broadly define the arts to include visual arts, creative writing, performing arts, sound art, music composition/computer music, film scoring, and mixed media. Art mentors can be from OSU or the community. We ask that art mentors provide opportunities for the student fellow to be involved in your creative practice and to receive feedback on their creative work.
  • Engineering mentors: These mentors must be affiliated with OSU’s College of Engineering. We ask that engineering mentors create opportunities for the student fellow to be involved in lab and/or fieldwork if possible.
  • Humanities mentors: Thesementors must be affiliated with a humanities discipline at OSU. We broadly define the humanities to involve a range of fields including, but not limited to, communication, literature, journalism, history, philosophy, religion, ethics, language, ethnic studies, and the interpretive social sciences employing humanistic methods. We ask that humanities mentors create opportunities for the student fellow to be involved in your research if possible and to receive feedback on their work.
  • Science mentors: Science mentors focus on physical and biological sciences including, but not limited to, biology/microbiology, botany, earth science, forestry, chemistry/biochemistry, oceanography, and physics. Science mentors may be an OSU researcher or someone from a research agency (e.g. USDA, USFS). We ask that science mentors create opportunities for the student fellow to be involved in lab and/or fieldwork if possible.

More about the Interdisciplinary Student Fellowships Program

This program was initiated by the Arts-Sci Faculty Group at OSU to provide students with the opportunity to explore the intersections of two ways of looking at the world. Fellowships are coordinated by the Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts and the OSU Arts-Sci Faculty Group, and they are sponsored by a number of colleges, units, and programs on campus as well as external support foundations. For more information about these fellowships and sponsors, please visit the program page or contact joy.jensen@oregonstate.edu.

About the OSU Arts-Sci Community: This informal group has been collaborating since 2017 to sponsor events and offer curricula and programming designed to foster discussions about the convergence between the arts and sciences.
