Spokane Conservation District seeks donations for Spokane’s first permanent Farmers Market

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – As a part of a years-long effort to revitalize a 50-acre quarry, the Spokane Conservation District plans to turn an old Scale House – where trucks would measure out how much asphalt they were putting on their trucks – into a hub for local agriculture.

“This will be a place that people will come to because there’s something going on here that they want to be involved in,” Conservation District Director Vicki Carter said.

The market will have space for several vendors, along with an industrial kitchen for food preparation and education.

“It’s something Spokane has talked about for a long time, but has not had a lot of momentum getting it done,” Carter said.

The project, done in coordination with local food aggregator and distributor Four Roots, is slated to be completed by the Spring of 2025. The Conservation District has landed just under $3 million in funding for the project so far, and this week they announced a capital campaign for people to donate if they want to help.

“This is an opportunity for our community to connect together, to learn and to grow together and to really become a part of our own food system,” Four Roots CEO Brittany Tyler said. “To build a more sustainable future for economics, for our children, for the next generation and for everything that goes throughout our community.”

“Any difference we have, people eat,” Carter said. “This is a place where we’ll come together to do that.”
