Student Learning Experience (SLE) Survey Login Information

How do I log into SLE?

You have three options for accessing the Student Learning Experience survey (SLE).

1. Use https://beav.es/Student-Learning-Survey.

2. Via MyOregonState.

  • Go to the Resources tab
  • Choose "Academic" resources
  • Click on "Student Learning Experience Survey (formerly eSET)"

3. Via the Student Learning Experience (SLE) survey link in your Canvas course site. This link will appear only when the SLE survey is in progress near the end of the term.

Please note that SLE works best with Firefox or Chrome and with pop-up windows enabled.

Taking the SLE Survey

How is the SLE survey different from eSET?

Beginning Fall 2021, OSU will begin using the Student Learning Experience survey for all eligible courses. See the new questions here. SLE questions focus on how students’ experiences in a course and their learning are interrelated. The questions are linked to OSU’s Quality Teaching Framework. After a two term pilot study, the overall SLE survey tool was approved by the Faculty Senate on June 10, 2021. The individual questions will continue to be refined until they are formally adopted by the Faculty Senate (likely in Spring 2022). Student feedback will be gathered through the survey system.

Will I be asked to complete surveys each term?

Yes. You will be asked to complete a SLE survey each term for every qualifying OSU course in which are you enrolled.  Please visit the calendar for the current term to find out when the survey is open.

When can I evaluate my instructors?

Visit the SLE calendar to find out when the survey period is open.

I did not receive an email notification. What happened to it?

Email notifications about SLE are sent to your ONID account. Please check there. If you forward your email from your ONID account to a different email account, check your spam folder for the second account to see if the email was misdirected. Another option is to check your trash folder to make sure you didn't accidently delete the message.

One of my courses is listed multiple times. Do I fill out a survey for each instructor?

If you took a course that is co-taught by several instructors or a course with multiple sections, you may see the course listed several times. Fill out the evaluation for each instructor you personally had, including section leaders and teaching assistants. Decline the evaluation for those you didn't personally have as an instructor.

A course I took is not listed for survey. Why not?

All OSU credit classes are included in SLE except:

  • Courses with fewer than 6 students, per the Faculty Senate (2012)
  • INTO IEP courses
  • Certain Veterinary Medicine courses
  • Certain blanket courses (those whose numbers start with 401-410, 501-510, 601-610, 701-710, and 801-810), for example, thesis and advising courses.

How do I provide a survey for my instructor for a blanket course (numbers starting with 401-410, 501-510, 601-610, 701-710, and 801-810)?

Currently, the majority of blanket courses are not evaluated.

Can I redo a survey?

Yes, surveys can be redone as long as the survey period is still open. See the SLE Calendar for dates.

If you feel you have made an error on one or more of your surveys and would like to fill it out again, you may reset the survey using these steps:

  • Log back into SLE
  • Click on the Reset button to the right of the course you would like to reevaluate
  • Enter the survey to provide your modified responses

Can I fill out a survey after the period is closed?

No. Surveys can be filled out during the survey period only. See the SLE Calendar for dates.

Do I have to fill out a survey?

No. To decline a survey, go to SLE, enter the specific course, scroll to the bottom and select the Decline button.

Anonymity

How do I know my survey is kept anonymous?

There are several safeguards in place to protect student anonymity:

  • OSU uses a third-party vendor for eSET and SLE surveys
  • No surveys occur for courses with fewer than 6 students
  • Demographic information (e.g., class status or major) is not collected
  • All collected data go to a well-protected system off campus, and student ID numbers are NOT associated with reports
  • Your identity will be revealed only if you choose to "sign" your comments
    • If you click the "Yes" button, your comments will be viewable by BOTH the instructor and the instructor's supervisor, and your name will be identified with your comments (i.e., you will no longer be anonymous).
    • If you click the "No" button, you will remain anonymous and your written comments will be seen ONLY by the instructor. Survey reports are not released to instructors until AFTER the deadline for grades to be turned into the Registrar's Office has passed and grades have been posted to the web.

Do instructors have the ability to see feedback on their courses before assigning final grades?

No. Survey responses are not available until after grades have been posted. Refer to the SLE calendar for report release dates for the current term.

What happens when I sign my comments?

A signed comment attaches your name to the comment, so it is no longer anonymous (the instructor can associate you with the comment). When you sign a comment it becomes viewable by the instructor's department head and dean as well. Unsigned comments are viewable only by the instructor.

Comments, whether signed or unsigned, are not viewable by instructors until after grades are filed.

Holds

Why is there a SLE hold on grades and transcripts?

The Faculty Senate decided to hold grades and transcripts until the completion of surveys. The reasoning behind their decision is two-fold:

  1. Limits on viewing grades are placed because a survey should be based on the student's total experience in the course, not on their grades.
  2. Limits on viewing grades/accessing transcripts are intended to increase student response to surveys. A high response rate is very important for the reliability of the data. These surveys are taken seriously and considered as part of faculty promotion and tenure reviews.

We want to make course surveys meaningful to inform and develop excellent instruction at OSU.

Will the course survey hold affect my ability to register?

No.  The hold placed by SLE does not affect registration.

Please note SLE is not the only type of hold on grades. If you are unable to register for courses, you likely have an additional non-SLE hold. The Student Holds page is a great resource for determining what other holds you may have on your account. Be sure to check the “offices with holds” section for holds that aren’t listed on the Student Holds page.

I've finished or declined my surveys, but can't see my grades. What do I do?

Completed

After you have completed ALL of your surveys, a Remove Hold button should appear on the Student Learning Experience survey page. Once you’ve pressed that button, holds on grades and transcripts should be removed within a few minutes. If you can't see your grades, you may have forgotten to click the Remove Hold button. Log out of SLE and log back in. This process should release the hold on your grades.

Declined

If you can't see your grades after declining a survey, double check that you chose Decline for all applicable courses and completed the surveys for the others. At this point, a Remove Hold button should appear on the Student Learning Experience page. Once you’ve pressed that button, holds on grades and transcripts should be removed within a few minutes. If you can't see your grades, you may have forgotten to click the Remove Hold button. Log out of SLE and log back in. This process should release the hold on your grades.

Additional information for either situation

Occasionally students have to wait 24 hours for the hold to be released.

If your grade for the term is not visible, it may not have been posted by the instructor yet. There may also be a non-SLE related hold.

How can I find out about my holds?

To view holds on your transcripts and grades:

  • View your Academic Overview card at MyOregonState or check on MyDegrees.
  • Copy and paste the beav.es link listed on the Overview card into your browser to see more information about a specific hold.

Please note SLE is not the only type of hold on grades. If you are unable to register for courses, you likely have an additional non-SLE hold. See the Student Holds page for more information.

Technical Issues

How do I solve the Browser Compatibility Check message when I link to SLE from Canvas?

If you see a Browser Compatibility Check message when you click “Student Learning Experience” in the Canvas menu, please review instructions for allowing specific cookies to allow the required cookies for the Student Learning Experience survey. If you need additional assistance, contact [email protected].

I get a blank page when I try to do a survey. What is wrong?

This message generally appears because of browser issues. Pop-ups may need to be enabled on your browser or you may need to clear the browser's cache. Alternately you may need to try a different browser (Firefox and Chrome work best).

Where should I go for information about technical issues?

Contact [email protected] if you are unable to access the SLE survey. Please describe the issue in your email; screen shots are always appreciated.
