Providing authors with easy-to-use software to create and export reading materials in underserved languages

The Grand Challenge

Lack of quality reading materials in local languages

A leading barrier to improving children’s reading skills is the lack of appropriate and engaging reading materials in local languages, which in turn leaves children unable to practice reading in a language they use and understand. A large body of evidence confirms that reading to young children in their local spoken or sign language builds a strong foundation for their education.

The Big Idea

Easy-to-use software for creating decodable, levelled books

All Children Reading: A Grand Challenge for Development launched the Enabling Writers prize to drive the creation of software—or the improvement of an existing software—that makes it easy, cost-effective and efficient for local authors to write and export high-quality early grade reading materials in local languages.
