The University at Albany is currently conducting a large cluster hire of 26 faculty positions in the broad area of artificial intelligence. These positions span the campus to include eight Schools and Colleges in 20 departments. In addition, the recruitment of a Director of the UAlbany Institute for Artificial Intelligence is underway.
Job Description:
The University at Albany, State University of New York, seeks an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Biological Sciences. The new hire will be a member of the UAlbany AI Institute. The successful candidate will provide evidence of expertise in AI and address how AI is integral to their research program.
The Department of Biological Sciences seeks candidates interested in developing a research program at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Biological Sciences. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in any field of Biological Sciences, computational biology, or related fields relevant to this search.
We welcome outstanding candidates who have demonstrated potential for developing and/or applying AI research to a broad range of biological fields, including but not limited to big-data processing algorithms. We welcome candidates whose research is relevant to understanding fundamental biological processes that contribute to physiology and disease through the use of learning theory, machine learning, deep learning, data mining, flexible networks, etc. We encourage candidates who combine wet laboratory and computational techniques. The ideal candidate should have a track record of creativity and productivity, and a desire to bring together people from different disciplines and foster new ideas and novel collaborations in our interdisciplinary, collaborative, and growing scientific community. The successful candidate will work with our faculty to complement, leverage, and build on existing strengths of the Department and College in molecular and cell biology, developmental biology, microbiology, neuroscience, -omics research, and regenerative biology. They will be expected to develop a productive and innovative research program, obtain external funding, and participate actively in the education of our diverse group of undergraduate and graduate scholars (i.e., teaching, training, and mentoring). They will have the opportunity to leverage the Department's strong ties and collaborative activities with university partners such as the Cancer Research Center, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the RNA Institute, School of Public Health, and community partners such as Albany Medical Center, the NY Department of Health Wadsworth Institute, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the SUNY Polytechnic Institute.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in any field of biological sciences or computer science (e.g., data science, computational biology, bioinformatics) or a related field, from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization by May 2023
- Applicants must address in their application their ability to work with a culturally diverse population.
- Applicants must demonstrate evidence of artificial intelligence in their existing research program.
- A demonstrated potential for research in the broad field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including machine learning, deep learning, data science, algorithms, and computational methods development, to understand complex intracellular and extracellular processes in any biological system.
- Applicants must address their plan and ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses.
- Applicants must have a demonstrated potential for seeking external funding for their research.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A record of research in the field of Artificial Intelligence in Biology
- Experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses
- Demonstrated experience in applying for and obtaining external funding.
