Designing and Building with Unconventional Materials

The bridges and buildings that surround us are usually constructed from well-established materials such as steel, concrete, bricks, and wood, however, the palette of potential construction materials is much richer. Join us for a presentation with Dr. Edward M. Segal, assistant professor of engineering, where he will discuss the recent design and research projects that he has worked on with students. These utilize unconventional materials, such as synthetic ropes, for rapidly-deployable footbridges, and reclaimed acrylic and aluminum cast in cracked clay, for architectural pavilions.
