This place has been getting some bad reviews lately but I just don't get it. We had an amazing dinner tonight - salmon for her and the bbq mahi mahi for me - and a great server to make sure her allergies were accommodated. He recommended a nearby ice cream spot that could get her a dairy free dessert and we also loved that place.

The history behind Poogan's Porch makes it nostalgic and food was amazing! My family will definitely go again.

This was the best meal of our trip to Charlestown, and it was not the most expensive! I did make reservations the day before using the website, but there were many empty tables in the room where we ate. The restaurant is in a quirky little historic house that is bigger on the inside.
Our waiter was interesting and helpful. Right after we were served our biscuits, a very loud family with many loud children were seated near us. Their noise filled the room. They had no manners. They almost ruined our meal, but fortunately we eat quickly and our meal was excellent. This does not reflect on the quality of the restaurant.
I had the salmon that was delicious and filling. My husband had the filet and said it was very good. The meat was high quality and prepared the right way. They potatoes were good. He also enjoyed the greens that were served as a side. I recommend Poogan's Porch.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 322201372Apr 19, 2024
I've heard so many people rave about Poogan's Porch, but I was slightly disappointed by my experience. Next time I'll have to make a reservation outside to see if the ambiance hits differently, but the inside decor is average at best.
When evaluating the food, it was really hit or miss for me. For instance, the complementary rolls they gave us were delicious. My cup of she-crab soup was really decadent and flavorful. However, the mussels were slightly below average - the broth was only just ok. Service was decent but they were clearly very slammed.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Atia M.Matthews, NC0135Apr 17, 2024
The service was good, but we did not enjoy the bland "southern" food.
Fried green tomatoes - bland but tasty with bacon jam
She crab soup - just ok
Sweet tea salmon - overcooked salmon, undercooked beans in succotash
Fried chicken - chicken is bland without hot honey, collards had an odd taste, and the beans/peas were undercookedHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 11, 20241 check-in
Oh Charleston, at this point you can do no wrong. Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that Charleston has some of the best food the states have to offer. But you are never fully prepared for amazing food, are you?
Poogans Porch is southern comfort food set in a historic home. Charleston seems to have an abundance of these types of restaurants, but this might be the best of the bunch. Sure there's full menu of items to choose from, but the fried chicken is the only thing that matters. It's that good
The fried chicken: a huge 4 piece portion! Poogans doesn't even mess with the dry breasts(sorry breast lovers), only all juicy thighs here. The chicken is well seasoned but the breading is everything. A crispy light batter that is unbelievably addictive. I've had too many fried chicken in my life to count, no food brings me more pleasure. Poogans version is easily top 3!
Poogans Porchs reputation precedes it. And with good reason. The chicken alone is worst the visitHelpful 7Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - Apr 1, 2024
First time having brunch here and it didn't disappoint! The portions are HUGE so bring your appetites. You must have a reservation to eat here - go online and get one to avoid disappointment. Our server recommended the blue crab dip and pimiento cheese fritters and both were delicious. The problem was after eating those I didn't have enough of an appetite to eat my chicken and waffles...which were really good. The chicken was tender and juicy and the outside was crispy. Maybe could have been a tad more flavorful, but still good. My daughter enjoyed the French toast, and my husband loved his spicy fried chicken sandwich and potato spirals.
Our server was awesome - pretty sure her name was Reese. Looking forward to coming back on our next visit to chucktown!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Mar 26, 2024
This is Southern comfort food - but in an upscale picturesque location. Poogans is a beautiful and historic converted house in downtown Charleston.
The food is Southern comfort food at its best. The complementary biscuits brought to the table are flakey and moist. Be warned - the portions sizes here are more than generous. Two people can leave quite full on appetizers alone. The restaurant's famous entrees are either the shrimp and grits or the fried chicken.
The fried green tomatoes are divine - not oily or greasy at all. The macaroni and cheese is decadent and delicious. The mussels and shrimp and grits were also excellent.
You cant go wrong with Poogan's. Not to be missed if you are visiting Charleston.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mar 17, 2024
Absolutely loved this place! Such a quaint little brunch spot with a great menu! I got the iced coffee with brandy and kahlua, a delicious start to our boozy brunch. The biscuits they brought out first were insane. Warm, soft and the perfect vessel for their out of this world butter. Wish I could take some of that butter home lol
Ordered the egg white omelette and I loved it! Veggies were delicious and home fries were perfectly crispy.
Our server was very busy but she still made sure she gave us great service. Definitely check out this place for brunch if you're in the area!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - 174258891Mar 6, 20241 check-in
We loved this place! Tried it out for a Sunday brunch after reading all the reviews - all accurate.
The restaurant is essentially a house converted. They have porch and indoor seating.
Service was excellent - our waitress was just awesome.
Food - delicious. I don't think you can go wrong. Portions are huge so beware!
Price - very reasonable.
Overall highly recommend!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
