Institute for Translational Research Education in Adolescent Substance Use (ITRE)

Admission Application

The application deadline is November 15, with the program beginning each Spring Semester.


The Institute will enroll up to 15 scholars each year from the University of South Florida (USF), Northern Arizona University (NAU), and community agencies.

This Institute is funded through a federal grant and covers all costs associated with scholar experiences, including in-state tuition and fees, textbooks, annual national conference registration, and required web-based training. Eligibility Criteria

Institute scholars will meet the following eligibility criteria to be considered for admission:

  1. Be enrolled in a degree program, preferably masters or doctoral, at USF or NAU in selected areas including (but not limited to) social work, rehabilitation and mental health counseling, criminology, public health, behavioral health, clinical psychology, nursing, and education, or work full time on behavioral health issues, in a community agency or school;
  2. Demonstrate interest in pursuing a career that emphasizes services research in the field of child and adolescent substance use and mental health; and
  3. Commit to remain enrolled in the Institute for four consecutive semesters (spring, summer, fall, spring) and attend the annual Translational Research in Adolescent Substance Use conference during both spring semesters of the program.   

Application Process for Current USF Graduate Students

To apply for admission to this Graduate Certificate program, you must:

  • Complete the Graduate Certificate Approval Form
    • Please download Adobe Acrobat to fill out this form.  Your broswer may not allow use of the dropdown form fields.  Please visit the Adobe website to obtain this free software.  You may also be able to download the full version from USF IT if you have been granted access and a license. 
    • Sign upon completion in Acrobat; electronic signatures are acceptable
  • Collect the following documents*:
    • Up-to-date resume or CV
    • Statement of Purpose (about 250 words)
    • Two letters of recommendation (at least one from a present or past professor)
  • Email completed paperwork and supplemental materials to gradstudies@usf.edu
    • Note: Approval paperwork may not be directed to this email via DocuSign. Please email directly.

Application Process for Non-degree Seeking Applicants (currently not pursuing a degree program at USF)

To apply for admission to USF, you must:

  • Complete the online application for admission
    • Please select "Graduate Certificate" as the Student Type
  • Pay the non-refundable $30 application fee
  • Upload the following required documents:
    • Unofficial transcripts from each college or university you attended, to include military credits and CLEP scores.
  • Upload the following documents:
    • Up-to-date resume or CV
    • Statement of Purpose
    • Two letters of recommendation (at least one from a present or past professor)
