Summer 2023 Verizon STEM Achievers Program
From June 5th to July 14, 2023, a collaborative effort between the Hillsborough Community College Institute for Corporate and Continuing Education and the National Association of Community College Entrepreneurship gave rise to the Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers Program. This enriching initiative took place at the HCC Dale Mabry Campus and was made possible through the generous support of the Verizon Foundation. Over the course of the program, around 150 middle school students were introduced to design thinking and STEM, with a touch of entrepreneurial mindset. The program unfolded in two phases: the initial three weeks comprised the boys’ camp, followed by the subsequent three weeks dedicated to the girls’ camp. The students delved into subjects including 3-D Printing & Modeling, Augmented and Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence & Robotics, Circuits & Electronics, and Architecture.
At the end of each phase of the camp, the students had an opportunity to display and pitch their final projects at an end-of-camp showcase. The projects reflected problems they identified, ideated, and prototyped using what they learned in camp. This year’s project theme was linked to UN Sustainability Goals, which serve as a global roadmap to developing a more sustainable future. As part of the display, the students also pitched their ideas to a panel of judges. We extend wholehearted congratulations to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winning teams!
