Ban nuclear weapons

On Oct. 7, The Spokesman printed an article announcing the awarding of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility and Ground Zero are both partner organizations of ICAN, and here in Spokane, Peace and Justice Action League, Veterans For Peace Chapter 35, and Pax Christi all formed a strong coalition of support for the anti-nuclear efforts of these groups.

President Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric and our country’s plans to spend up to $1.5 trillion to rebuild our entire nuclear arsenal present us with a rapidly growing risk of nuclear war.

There are over 15,000 nuclear bombs on earth and estimates are that if as few as 200 of these were launched the world’s climate would be altered for at least 10 years, resulting in starvation and millions of casualties. With concern for the future of our children and our planet, we ask that you write members of Congress and support the growing worldwide effort to ban all nuclear weapons.
