Volunteer FAQ's

How do I become a volunteer?

Apply for the program through our website, or by attending a volunteer information session. Applicants will be expected to complete a background check and short placement interview. Once accepted into the program, volunteers are required to complete training and orientation including online modules, and one in-person session.

How old do you have to be to volunteer?

Our Junior Curator and Zoo Crew educational programs specially select teens ages 14-17. Individual volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. If you have individuals under the age of 16 who would like to participate in a group volunteer project or a special event, please email volunteers@okczoo.org to discuss potential accommodations.

What is the time requirement?

The minimum requirement is within our Zoo host assignment. Zoo Hosts are expected to donate 50 hours of time per year to maintain an active status. Other assignments may have additional time requirements.

Is there a cost involved with volunteering?

Some volunteer opportunities, including all husbandry aid assignments, require proof of a negative Tuberculosis test. The cost associated with this test will vary by testing location.

Can I volunteer to help with the animals?

Through our husbandry aide volunteer program, a volunteer can assist our caretaker team with maintenance of Zoo habitats, animal care areas, animal diets, and more.

Can I volunteer in the veterinary hospital?

Our veterinary hospital is only able to offer preceptorships for fourth year veterinary students.

Will I get to touch the animals?

We are a protected contact zoo, which means that there is a barrier between human and animal for the safety of both. Unauthorized contact with the animals is prohibited and is grounds for immediate termination from the program. While husbandry aides work near out animals, these assignments to not involve direct animal contact, handling, or training.
