Hurricane Ian Faculty Academic Advisory

Academic FAQs for faculty

Academically, our goal is to provide the best learning environment for students, while recognizing that some students and faculty will be unable to start back on Monday, Oct. 10. Maintaining continuity, even during these challenging times, ensures the integrity of an FGCU degree and the impact our students will have on the world.

With this in mind, we are very sensitive to and aware of the large-scale impact that Hurricane Ian has had on our community, and we are committed to work through these difficulties with our students, faculty, and staff.

As we move forward, flexibility is key. Faculty are expected to adjust their course schedules and modality as appropriate to address for the time missed.

For faculty who taught in person prior to Hurricane Ian, you may continue to do so. The revised academic calendar gives you the extra days to be able to keep up with your course content needs in a way that preserves your class meeting time and location. Faculty may also choose to use a different modality to teach their classes for the rest of the term. Many options for weekend instructional hours are available, including, but not limited to, in-person, synchronous online, asynchronous online, recorded lectures and opportunities for individual assignments.

For faculty choosing to continue to teach in person, the following framework provides you the dates when the classroom space is available. Use the previously scheduled room and time on these days.

We recognize there is no ideal solution to meet the needs of every student and faculty member on campus, but we believe this is the best guarantee for student success while emphasizing flexibility. We have all been affected in some way by Hurricane Ian. Students, please advocate for your unique needs and communicate your ability to attend classes with faculty. Likewise, faculty, please make decisions for content delivery that allows you to lead with compassion and be as accommodating as possible to our students. FGCU empowers our faculty to make the best decisions for how their courses will continue this term so students can meet the course learning outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I required to teach in-person on Saturdays?

No. Faculty are required to make up missed hours for their courses, and your regular classroom will be available on Saturdays if you choose to use it. However, you have the option to use alternative teaching modalities that could replace in-person instruction, including synchronous online classes, asynchronous instruction, assigned activities and hybrid modality classes, etc.

I teach Saturday classes in the regular schedule. What happens to my classes now?

There are a limited number of Saturday classes impacted by this change. You will be contacted by your department chair to accommodate the specific circumstances of your class.

What assistance will be available to me?
FGCU's Back Channel Assistant (BCA) program creates an opportunity for students to earn service-learning hours OR wages while providing support to instructors of digital/remote courses.

How do I make up a four-credit class with labs?

While faculty are required to make up missed hours for their courses, there is great flexibility. If you want it, your regular classroom will be available on weekends. However, you have the option to use alternative teaching modalities that could replace in-person instruction, including synchronous online classes, asynchronous instruction, assigned activities and hybrid modality classes, etc.
