Participants needed for Milk Protein Research

A Ph.D student in the lab, Yunyao Qu, is conducting research on the effects of glycomacropeptide (GMP) in promoting human gut health and beneficial gut bacteria in subjects with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Yunyao is mentored by Drs. Dave Dallas and Si Hong Park.

The goal of this study is to assess the usefulness of daily consumption of a common dairy ingredient known as glycomacropeptide (GMP) in promoting human gut health and beneficial gut bacteria in subjects with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). There is evidence that this food may improve gut health by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria and reducing inflammation.

In the study, adults with IBS will consume a regular serving of a protein shake for three weeks. The study will take 7 weeks total, including a one-week baseline, a three-week feeding and a three-week washout period. Small samples of blood (weekly collected at Oregon State university) and stool will be collected by subjects at home (weekly during baseline and washout weeks and twice a week during the feeding weeks, and diet and GI function will be recorded. The study will be performed at Oregon State University.

Inclusion criteria:

Adults with IBS diagnosis, 18-30 years old having a primary healthcare provider

No known lactose intolerance, any known other gastrointestinal disease or disorder beyond IBS, or major gastrointestinal surgery

Exclusion criteria:

Habitual use of laxatives or antacids. Pregnancy, use of antibiotics within one month prior to the study, use of probiotics within one month prior to the study; any medical or psychological condition that would preclude individuals from the study, dairy protein allergy.

You will be compensated with a $300 gift card.
